Alex Libby Alex Libby has a background in IT support. He has been involved in supporting end users for almost 20 years in a variety of different environments; a recent change in role now sees Alex working as an MVT test developer for a global distributor based in the UK. Although Alex gets to play with different technologies in his day job, his first true love has always been with the open source movement, and in particular experimenting with CSS/CSS3, jQuery, and HTML5. To date, Alex has written 11 books on subjects such as jQuery, HTML5 Video, SASS, and CSS for Packt, and has reviewed several more. Responsive Web Design with HTML5 and CSS3 Essentials is Alex's twelfth book for Packt, and second completed as a collaboration project.

Where's the rest of the book?

As a web developer, I'm always looking for new ideas and better ways of implementing page elements and user experience features. Thus, my decision to check-out this book.

Unfortunately, "Responsive Web Design with HTML5 and CSS3 Essentials", left me disappointed and unsatisfied in this regard. It's clear the authors have a good comprehension of RWD knowledge and know-how but their lack of expanded coverage on the discussed topics coupled with many missing topics makes the book useful for only a small subset of RWD development.

The good...
* The book mainly shines on the coverage of media related web design, both for desktop and mobile. The information on video, pictures, and images is critical for sites where the conveyance of such elements is a large part of site pages. However, this coverage could have been condensed to a single chapter.
* There is also some good, albeit incomplete, coverage of grid and flexbox layouts as well as some examples of page content layout shifts (aka the responsiveness) for different screen sizes and orientations.

The not so good...
* The book is extremely light on actual examples WITH supporting code. Chapter 4, Exploring [CSS] Media Queries, was the least offensive in this regard but I still felt it lacked in cohesiveness. At a minimum, I would have liked to have seen more CSS with supporting screenshots demonstrating topics in action. Taking this a step further, I would have liked to have seen more coverage of element repositioning with diffferent screen sizes especially those using flexbox and index.
* There is some repetitive reuse of figures, especially in regards to break points.
* The use of the term media takes on different meanings throughout the book and the shifting usage can be a distraction.
* I think the book would have been much more useful if they had developed as an example a typical mobile page with standard elements including a hamburger menu, logo and image usage in a confined space, tagline rework or removal on page shrinkage, and floating side menu to access lists or submenus. (I mention the latter because I often find that main content gets shifted so far down the page the user becomes exhausted from constantly scrolling it into view, and then even more infuriated by having to scroll back-up to access a menu or submenu.) In this way, the chapters would have been more cohesive (Chapter 4 would need to be moved forward) and I think examples would have become more natural.

Other coverage that would have made the book a gem, especially for new comers, includes: the use of floating elements for quick page navigation (esp. return to top), affixing the top menu coupled with my other favorite feature, shrink the header on page scroll, and targeting inputs (buttons, radio's, checkbox's) for mobile usage. (I think the latter is often overlooked the most in technical prose. I prefer to completely restyle checkbox's, radio's and even select's for mobile usage. Most users find clicking a stock checkbox input an absolute nuisance on a mobile display (and to an extent on a desktop).) There is also no mention of standards, such as minimum button size (at least 37px or increasing the active touch area), enlarging text size or libraries such as Bootstrap.

In short, I think if the authors were to extend the material on the current topics, cut away some of the fluff and add coverage of other RWD topics, the book would reach a wider audience and be more useful as a reference. Who knows, maybe I should do some book writing of my own.

I was able to raise a bonsai with the help of this book!

I always wanted to have a garden of Bonsai at home but when I tried it a few years ago, I failed and the tree that I planted had died. I came across this book one day and decided to download it as it was free that time. Upon reading this book, I tried planting a bonsai. I followed every steps mentioned in this book.

Complying to every procedures and precautions was made easy by this author which I really liked because I'm not really good in planting. Although, I have already tried planting different kinds of plants before, I still consider myself a beginner when it comes to planting so I really needed a reference that can teach me all the fundamentals of planting to raising a bonsai.

Overall, this book has been really helpful. I would recommend this book for beginners to Bonsai.

Good but still missing something to make me attached to the topic.

Well, the book is very informative, but then again, it's like searching every question under google. I don't know how to describe why I cannot give a 5star rating because I think there is still something to improve about it.

I like how it transitions the whole importance of knowing everything about bonsai as a hobby and as a helpful relaxing experience for everyone.
With my interest on gardening, this book helped me alot for exploring another addition in my things to do next spring!

I sure hope the author will give out such awesome tips on choosing the right seed, pot, tree and even where to place the bonsai.

I recommend this book or those avid researchers and alike! They would definitely enjoy this book if they want to know about bonsais

Bonsai!

We took a vacation in Japan last 4 months and it was there where my interest with Bonsai started. We visited this temple near Kyoto and I was amazed by how beautiful the Bonsais where meticulously decorated in the shrine’s garden.

After arriving home, I decided to make a hobby out of planting and decorating Bonsais. I bought some books about Bonsais but this one it probably my favorite. Simple yet full of details…but I just have some problems with book though. It came short with the illustrations…pictures can add a bit of life to the book.

About the Author

Shein-Chung Chow, PhD, is a professor in the Department of Biostatistics and Bioinformatics at Duke University School of Medicine. Dr. Chow is also an adjunct professor at Duke–National University of Singapore Graduate Medical School, an adjunct professor at North Carolina State University, and founding director of the Global Clinical Trial and Research Center in Tianjin, China. He is editor-in-chief of the Journal of Biopharmaceutical Statistics and editor-in-chief of the Chapman & Hall/CRC Biostatistics Series. He is the author or co-author of more than 250 papers and 24 books, including Adaptive Design Methods in Clinical Trials, Second Edition, Handbook of Adaptive Designs in Pharmaceutical and Clinical Development, and Controversial Statistical Issues in Clinical Trials. A fellow of the ASA and member of the ISI, Dr. Chow has received the ASA Chapter Service Recognition Award, the DIA Outstanding Service Award, and the ICSA Extraordinary Achievement Award.

What a great book! I've been using this book for the last 2 months and it has really helped me stay on task and focused on my goals. Before starting the Playbook, I had so many goals, dreams and plans. My efforts were scattered and I wasn't seeing things through to completion. The "My Purpose Discovery Formula" and the "My Life Intention Matrix" have helped me to become more focused and narrow down my goals. I've since published my first book and started on two more.

I was blown away by how much is included in this book. The goal setting and daily planner tie in perfectly together to really help you set goals and stick to them. My favourite is the Life Intention Matrix and Dream Planner. These two exercises really opened my eyes to what I wanted to do with my life. The weekly check-ins help me lay out and plan what I need to do to get there. I highly recommend this book.

About the Author

Bonnie S. Brennen is the Nieman Professor of Journalism in the Diederich College of Communication at Marquette University. Her research focuses on the intersection between labor and journalism history as well as on relationships between media, culture, and society. She is author of For the Record: An Oral History of Rochester, New York Newsworkers and co-editor, with Hanno Hardt, of three books: The American Journalism History Reader; Picturing the Past: Media, History, and Photography; and Newsworkers: Towards a History of the Rank and File, also published by Routledge.
