In Part IV, the stability of Ekman boundary layers and boundary layer effects in magnetohydrodynamics and quasigeostrophic equations are discussed. The boundary layers which appear near vertical walls are presented and formally linked with the classical Prandlt equations. Finally spherical layers are introduced, whose study is completely open.

PREFACE

This book is a primer on human behavior in organizations for students of management at three different levels—undergraduate, graduate, and executive education. Our goal in this volume is to prepare employees and managers to diagnose and understand organizational issues and be more effective. The reader includes writings by scholars and practitioners in the key areas of organizational behavior, which have been divided into four sections: "Understanding Yourself and Other People at Work," "Creating Effective Work Groups," "Leadership and Management," and "Managing Effective Organizations." This edition contains basic ideas and concepts, new research findings and practical applications, as well as emerging perspectives that suggest the future shape of the field. In contrast with previous editions, there is more emphasis on international topics, teams, commitment, creativity, diversity, e-commerce, and global business.

Well-grounded OB course basics

"The organizational behavior reader" contains twenty chapters, each with two or three readings by recognized academic experts, usually adapted from the original source, e.g., Harvard Business Review. Chapters begin with the psychological contract (1), theories of managing people (2), individual and organizational learning (3), individual and organizational motivation (4), ethics and values (5), personal growth and work stress (6), and later topics include managing diversity (12), leadership (13), decision making (15), performance appraisal (18), and managing change (20). The pantheon of authors features experts such as Henry Mintzberg, Jay Conger, Denise Rousseau, Ed Lawler, Peter Senge, Cary Cooper, Deborah Tannen, Geert Hofstede, Hank Sims, Victor Vroom, Jeffrey Pfeffer, Ray Miles, and Rosabeth Moss Kanter. There are numerous charts, diagrams, graphs and models. Anecdotes and examples are plentiful. Self-assessments are rare. Few of the readings offer empirical data; the emphasis is on mental models, images, and concepts.
Professors of organizational behavior, looking for readings rather than integrated text, exercises, and cases, as well as a less expensive alternative to traditional college textbooks, will find this book appealing. These authors are, in general, engaging and highly readable. Chapters can be assigned in an order or avoided altogether to please the teacher's preferences. The breadth of topics, the currency of the treatments, and the expertise of the authors provide a solid foundation for the primary college OB course. Graduate students in need of less text structure and faculty in need of less ancillary materials will find the most benefit.
The book is rooted in social psychology and emphasizes perception, learning, thinking, images and personality, e.g., interpersonal communication, attribution, creativity. There is less on the `behavior' side of organizational behavior. Several authors use the device of posing `myths' to contrast with the author's learned, alternative state (`fact'), and sometimes the myths read more like `conventional wisdom' or the author's own attempt to make his or her point more vivid by presenting a myth that exists only in the minds of a few people. For business school students, this reader is more about organizations and people than about business. Business faculty and courses adopting this book will likely want and need to provide a management context.

This is a rating from my 9 year old son that has completed the Harry Potter Series and the Lightening Thief Series....

He picked this one up and the library and was done in 3 days! He absolutely loved it!

"It was very adventurous and cool." Now he wants to read the other books by this author...since book #2 isn't out, he is planning on starting her other series. Great for my little reader at home!

Can't wait for the other prequels!

I love the Children of the Red King Series, so finding out the back story is fascinating. I'm a high school English teacher, and I also loved the Harry Potter books, but these are definitely original and NOT a spin off or copy cat. I think they're for young readers, like 4th grade, but I thoroughly enjoy them anyway.

Beautiful & Delicious!

I purchased Martha's special cookie magazine at Christmas a few years back, and it's simply falling apart now because I've made her cookies again and again. I was excited to see this book as a lot of my favorites from the cookie mag are included and the protective book allows me to keep these yummy recipes in one safe place. The photos are stunning - there's a pictorial table of contents (very unique!) based on things like 'soft and chewy' and 'crisp and crunchy' and there's even a delightful section in the back that shows you how to package your cookies for gifting. I simply can't wait to try the all the recipes!

Absolutely... Wonderful!

This is a wonderful cookie book. Martha Stewart recipes are really great. For those of you who are hesitant to buy this book, do not hesitate any longer. The cookies are splendid, the packaging wonderful (there are pictures for every cookie) and overall a great book of combined talent. So far I have tried the honey florentienes; cigarette russes; italian polenta cookies; choco. pistachio biscotti; buttered rum meltaways; thumbprints and Brown Butter Toffee blondies. The last two are the only ones thus far that I did not care for, but others seemed to like them. The rest, especially the biscotti and meltaways were awesome. Tonight, I try the rum raisin cookies...

I have read some of the reviews of this book saying that most of the recipes are the same ones over and over. For those of you who have or will recieve this book, Ms. Stewart points out that most cookie recipes contain the same base elements -- butter, milk, eggs, flour, etc. When you add different flavors, you will get different cookies. Any one who bakes should know this. Add several other ingredients and you will get a totally different textured cookies. Take away an ingredient or two and yet again, another texured cookie. As consumers and bakers we expect this from every type of edible food. This book, nor any other, is any different.

This cookie book is simple and beautiful. Also delicious... the Cookies, not the Book :) I highly recommend.

I love this book!

I have bought 4 copies of this book to give to friends because I love it. It is the perfect gift for anyone who likes to bake. I have been baking one new cookie every week with my son and daughter since we got this book in the summer.
What I love is that there are all types of recipes, simple ones and more complex, with a wide variety of flavors. The book is divided by cookie categories: Light and Delicate, Soft and Chewy, Crumbly and Sandy, Chunky and Nutty, Cakey and Tender, Crisp and Crunchy and Rich and Dense. Each category is accompanied with beautiful photos of the cookies, which are all shown in the table of contents. The book has beautiful layout (as always for martha books) and easy to follow recipes.

A Good Friend To Have

It is impossible to learn anything without your feet being firmly grounded. That's what this book offers. It will help build a grounded framework for the bass player. Greg Mooter invites the student to explore the intrument from the ground up. From cleaning the bass to polishing you techniques, all is inclusive. Whenever you read a paragraph, a page or a chapter, you'll come out of your exercises saying, "now that's much better". Greg offers a map to good and sound techniques for your development as a new, intermediate or in some cases veteran players. I urge you to consider this book not just as a purchase but as an investment into furthering your knowledge of the bass. Whether you play the upright or a 4,5 or 6 stringer, The Bass Player's Handbook must be an integral part of your learning and development. Develop your fingering, improve on listening to tones, make physical adjustments to your bass, how to warmup properly and without strain, of all these scenarios will improve day by day. Great book by a great guy!

This book contains great tips and a great philosophy for bass players.
It stresses the importance of both mental and physical health.There is an in depth description
of common injuries suffered by bassists. as well as tips to avoid them.
The book starts out with the history of both electric and acoustic bass.
There are great chapters on bass construction and adjustments.There are helpful chapters on harmonics,
fingerboard theory, and left and right hand techniques and much more. A must have for both beginners and Pros.

Very Informative, But Dry

This book is very wordy. Not in a verbose kind of way, but is richly informative. In fact, if you were to take it seriously and read every word, you would take a week to get from cover to cover. This is not really for the beginner as much of it is IMO appreciated only after you've played the bass for a while. I'd say, if you've been playing for at least a year or so, go ahead and get it. You'll have a few revelations of things you never understood (or even knew about), and be reinforced in other areas. Great book.

Beautifully, felicitously, and movingly written

Jazz historian Edward A. Berlin has written (somewhat resentfully, for he feels that its very excellence has been a barrier to further, and sometimes more accurate studies of the subject):

"This remarkable book, often called 'the bible of ragtime,' has enthralled, enlightened, and inspired' generations of ragtime enthusiasts. The authors had the foresight to locate and capture the words and stories of surviving ragtimers and cast them in a beguiling form that, more than a half-century later, continues to work its magic on new readers. Though a few, isolated articles on ragtime had preceded publication of this book, They All Played Ragtime, at least figuratively, is where ragtime research begins.

The book also has undoubted flaws. It expresses attitudes that clearly reveal leftist political ideology of the 1930s . . . too sharply drawing and exaggerating class distinctions between the purity of 'folk' inspiration against the commercialism of 'Tin Pan Alley' craft. .. and some quotations are even taken out of context. .. Still, the power of the book and its tale remains. Most successive writers merely restate what they read in They All Played Ragtime."

I have just read this book in an old edition and have also fallen under its spell and that of the African American geniuses who created this subtle, supremely musical art. What a shame this book is not now more widely available. In my reading I have often stopped to put it down to marvel a bit over a turn of phrase or moving portrait, such as those of Scott Joplin and his idealistic white patron, the unsung hero, John Stark.
