Alan Downs, PhD, is a clinical psychologist practicing in Beverly Hills, California. The former CEO of Michael’s House Treatment Center, Downs now maintains a thriving private psychotherapy practice and an intensive outpatient addiction program.

Important but flawed

This book, particularly the first third (as other reviewers have noted) and the lengthy second edition add-on (Chapter 14) is a good starting point in understanding the origins and life-long impact of gay shame and how to overcome it. The author's three stage model for how gay men experience/deal with shame (overwhelm, compensation, authenticity) is useful and occasionally eye-opening as are his observations of how shame at each stage can be "foreclosed" on (ignored, buried, etc.) or healthfully resolved. The solid practical advice offered in the aforementioned Chapter 14 ("Skills for Living an Authentic Life), while being tailored to the gay male experience, could be of benefit to a much wider audience.

The main flaw with "The Velvet Rage" -- and it's a stunner -- is that it focuses almost exclusively on only one type of gay man, i.e. the urban, successful, materialistic, attractive, sexually promiscuous, well-traveled, fabulous "powergay". Life examples from the less-than-fabulous, i.e. rural/suburban gay men, unsuccessful or non-materialistic gay men, poor and middle-class gay men, ordinary-looking gay men, gay homebodies, senior gay men, disabled gay men, gay men of color, and many others are almost nowhere to be found, likely because these people appear largely absent from the author's social and professional circles (which he talks about a great deal, almost to the point of bragging at times). Though surely unintentional, this is a terrible oversight for a book that seeks to provide psychological support to a marginalized minority, and I suspect a fair number of gay men reading this book will feel further alienated in some way as a result.

I would still recommend "The Velvet Rage", as it is vitally important for gay men to understand the toxic shame that lies at the core of our personal and collective psychological shadows as well as acquire the psychological tools necessary to make positive changes in our lives. Just don't expect to see your life experiences adequately reflected if you're an average gay Joe.

About the Author
Henry W. Stoll is professor emeritus of mechanical engineering at Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois. He has extensive industrial experience in mechanical engineering design and design for manufacture and consults widely with industry. Before retiring from full-time teaching in 2008, Professor Stoll taught product design, mechanical systems design, and manufacturing for many years. Dr. Stoll is the author of two books and several book chapters on design for manufacture and structured design methods. He has presented more than 100 on-site design for manufacture, quality by design, and design for everything workshops to industry.

A sexy and comprehensive survey of gay male comics

I love this book, I found it to be fairly comprehensive in terms of including European, American,Canadian, and Japanese gay male comics throughout modern history. I like that there was a broader range of comics included because if the book had only been about American work I would have been very disappointed. It is a colorful book, there are nicely laid out excerpts from each comic. There is sweet, romantic comics and darker, edgy comics featured throughout the book. If you're a fan of gay male comics or if you're interested in this genre and want to know more this book is definitely worth it.

I discovered several brilliant creators I'd never come across before

I've been reading comics since I was 7 and I've been reading gay comics since I came out as a teenager. I thought I'd heard about every artist out there. Bit in Stripped, I discovered several brilliant creators I'd never come across before. I was excited to find out about these guys and have the chance to sample their work.
Stripped isn't a survey of every artist who's created gay comics. Instead, the author has chosen a handful of bright talents and gives in depth information about each of them, along with several pages of stunning and sexy artwork.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would love to see sequel.

A 'Growing' Trend

What with the increasing presence of anime and cartoon based Marvel Comic Book movies gaining so much popularity it is not surprising that people who appreciated comic book art would be a large audience for books such as this.
Markus Pfalzgraf knows about as much about gay comics as anyone in the business and he is responsible for this major tome of collected comic book constructors. He opens his collection with an essay about the creation of and the growing appreciation for gay comics. He presents the fact that not only is the art creative and valid but that the accompanying stories are fascinating.

For those in the know, the artists and comic book stories included here are Tom of Finland, Hardcore Underground, Howard Cruse, FLO, YPE, Ralf Konig, Europe/Comic Strip Continent, HIV/AIDS: Timebomb, future and eternity, Censorship. Gengoroh Tagame, Japanese Comics, Patrick Fillion, Mioki, Dale Lazarov, Zack, Franze & Andarle, Gay Super Heroes, Mianstrem, and some interviews with Andreas c. Knigge and Henri Dhellemmes. And the rest is all comic fantasies - lots of dark and dirty imagery that has at its root entertainment and fun.

Durch Modellierung der Realität mit Hilfe der objektorientierten Ontologie und Implementierung dieser Modelle durch Knowledge Computing Technologien unter Java werden konkrete Anwendungsfälle beherrschbar.

Auf der Basis der klassischen Informationsverarbeitung entwickelt der Autor deren basale theoretische Konzepte (Daten, Information, Symbol, Repräsentation) weiter (Wissensverarbeitung). Das Buch plädiert für eine Modellierung der erkenntnistheoretischen Grundfrage, die Wahrnehmung und Erkenntnis als handlungsbezogene kreative Dimensionierungen von Bedeutungen im Kontext des Lebenszyklus eines Systems begreift. Intelligente und kognitive Fähigkeiten seien untrennbar mit dem Lebenszyklus eines Systems verflochten. Problemlösung erfolgt dadurch, dass die kognitiven Komponenten in kreativer Weise die Welt modellieren. Zur Unterstützung dieser handlungsorientierten Theorie baut der Autor auch auf konnektionistische Modelle. Der aus dem Kognitivismus hervorgegangene Konnektionismus erweist sich als wichtiger Ausgangspunkt für die handlungsorientierte Interaktionstheorie.

Dr. Matthias Haun ist u.a. seit 2002 bei der SUBITO AG beschäftigt und arbeitet dort als Abteilungsleiter der WEB-Entwicklung an der Neuentwicklung von Knowledge Management- und Decision Systemen.

Seine Dissertation, zahlreiche Publikationen sowie seine Dozententätigkeit beschäftigen sich mit den Themen Wissensmanagement sowie Technologien der Künstlichen Intelligenz und des Künstlichen Lebens, die er auch in viele internationale Entwicklungs- und Forschungsprojekte erfolgreich einbrachte.

Zur Zeit liegt sein Forschungschwerpunkt im Bereich Robotik auf der Entwicklung intelligenter Software und deren Integration in Hardwaretechnologien zur Steigerung der systemischen Intelligenz (sIQ) von autonomen Robotersystemen.

Super cute book for toddlers

My toddler LOVES this book. This is the reason he has started eating broccoli. Why? because there's a plate with some food on it at the end that features broccoli. Suddenly he loves it! We went out to eat and he stole all of my husband's broccoli off of his plate.

I took off a star because bananas do not grow like that. They grow in bunches, not dispersed like apples!

Kids love to feed the animals!

My kids love this one as much as Tuck Me In! It is interactive and the kids love seeing how the food is either peeled or eaten after "feeding" it to them. Like Tuck Me In, you get a mix of the more common kid book animals as well as not so common ones. So even mom is surprised with delight, which is a good thing because my three year old makes me read it so many times!!!

I love flap books. This book is great for pre-schoolers to learn animal names and the foods they like. Little ones will enjoy this. The animals are appealing. Featured are: bunny, seal, monkey, squirrel, mouse, panda, and a horse. Love the colors and faces of animals.

Very Inspiring!

This book is terrifically inspiring; giving lots of tips and hints for making things in life easier; and seeing the bright side. I have used some of the tips already! I felt like I was being talked to by a best friend. I can't wait to share it with my daughters, aunts, all the women in my life!

What a gem!

This book has such a wealth of great relationship info that I bought several copies for friends. Guess what? Their boyfriends and husbands loved the book too. What a beautiful mind Janea Padilha has! And she conveys her uplifting philosophy with humor and charm. While the book highlights the author's Brazilian bikini wax invention, it's really about how she learned how to deal with life situations from her unconventional Brazilian mother. Honestly...it's some of the best advice I've ever seen.

Co-author and celebrity journalist Martha Frankel adds polish and her innate down-to-earth tone to this must-have gem. BTW...check out Martha Frankel's bio Hats & Eyeglasses. I couldn't put it down.

As a nonfiction reader, my "guilty pleasures" are the books on French women, Southern women, etc. I don't expect great information, just amusement and entertainment so I thought I would enjoy reading a Brazilian perspective, but I felt that her main emphasis was on her waxing business and how she counseled her clients.

This book is SO feeding my spirit right now! I can already tell that I will read and refer to this book a lot more than once!

The Excuse-less Life is very clear, easy to understand and easy to read! ...while at the same time, it is VERY "rich" in its depth of thought and relevance to life! Dr. Fizer takes the "very complex" ways in which our brain tends to entangle itself with excuse, and lays out a clear and practical path of thought towards peace, wholeness and authenticity. The "Living Laws" really bring out the real-life application of what "ridding yourself of excuses" actually "lives like!" Renata-called Rennie by friends, lovers, and people who pay her for sex, which is to say just about everyone in Miami Beach-doesn't so much like living dangerously as she likes doing fun things that happen to be dangerous. One of those fun things is Richard, an English professor who's risking his marriage by continuing to see Rennie but just can't help himself. Her reckless allure has also captivated her colleague Francisco and her next door neighbor Julie, who eavesdrops on Rennie's exploits and struggles to turn them into the great American novel. The blood, lust and drama are vivid and visceral, but Hendricks is so determined to avoid trite lessons and happy endings that she fails to assemble any kind of ending at all, relying instead on entropy and disaster to bring her story stumbling to a halt. These exquisitely developed characters deserve better. As Hendricks refines her hallmark noir style, perhaps she'll get a better handle on which clichés are worth keeping.

The Queen is back!

Renata is an empirical existentialist with a perfect ten body. She lives for pleasure full throttle and makes no excuses; she hooks for a living because it fits.

Richard is a poet, professor, husband and father obsessively in love with the above mentioned hooker. He's lost in his job, his marriage, his creativity and his quest for Renata's love. His attempts at coexistence with a normal life are spiraling out of control.

Julie is an aspiring writer paralyzed by insecurity and fear. Her need to prove herself with a tome worthy of daddy's praise places her in the path of a hurricane (both figuratively and literally). She's not quite sure if she's a lesbian or just another victim of love (love for Renata).

Francisco is also a hooker (the male version) and a small time drug dealer; a Florida version of a knockaround guy minus the traditional mob, although he does have business associates who make being around him dangerous. He's also Renata's lover of choice (as in she doesn't charge him), but is street savvy enough to understand the term "lover" as it applies to those who can't love; he's a convenience much the same way his job is a convenience to those requiring his services.

Pepe is a baby four foot python ... enough said.

Fans of Hendricks' special brand of noir erotica have been waiting five years for her latest sizzler and they'll be more than happy with Cruel Poetry. Spot on dialogue and an ability to absorb readers into her characters' dark worlds (worlds we can all relate to--whether they are dominated by obsession, jealousy, a failed marriage, a walk on the wild side, snakes or just an overwhelming need to feel complete) place Hendricks' noir at the forefront of the genre.

The poet's insatiable desire for Renata to love him has made a mess of his life. How his world comes apart piece by piece is fascinating and all too real. The good girl playing with dangerous people faces frightening consequences she can't imagine. Renata's emotional bond with Pepe (the cobra) reminds one of another of Hendrick's noir tales, Iguana Love. Renata can't feel love for people the way she can respect a snake (Pepe is genuine). Although she cares for people (Julie, Francisco and to some extent, even Richard), it will take a hurricane and a neatly wrapped surprise ending before she ever gets the chance to feel what everyone else around her seem so constrained by.

Vickie Hendricks remains the first Queen of Noir. Her much anticipated latest, Cruel Poetry, will draw you in with visceral, erotic and psychological obsessions. The ending will rock your world. Long live the Queen.

How low can you go?

In this, her latest novel, Hendricks, the undisputed queen of South Florida noir, plunges deeper into the pathological motivations of people who by some deep human flaw have shed most of their morals for survival.

Cruel Poetry drops some of the usual almost cartoonish noir devices Henricks fans have come to expect. Instead the reader is offered a more literary treat that puts her latest book on a par with more literary classics like "The Story of O" or the Marquis de Sade's writings.

For my taste, the first few sex scenes seemed a bit too obviously designed to pull in readers looking just for the steamy stuff, but it didn't take long for the plot to grab hold of me. Like Pepe, the slithering pet snake writhing along Renata's lovely limbs and trunk, it slowly gripped me. After that I couldn't put the book down.

Henricks manages in this novel to paint a truly vivid portrait of a woman living by impuse alone. Renata is a survivor pure and simple. Jules, the somewhat innocent neighbor who views Renata and her bizarre life of revolving sexual partners coupled with complicated loyalities through a peephole in the wall adjoining their rooms, struggles to retain her purity even as she is hypnotically drawn into Rennie and her boyfriend Francisco's steamy world of sex, alcohol and drug addcition, and murder.

The tension created by this is totally mesmerizing. Jules near fatal attraction to Renata is only matched by Richard, the unhappy English professor and failed poet who is willing to sacrifice anything to fufill his fantasy of redeeming the "whore" in Renata, and thereby perhaps redeeming himself.

One word of warning though. Don't read this book in public. You'd have to be dead not to be aroused by it.

How much you like this book...

...will be pretty much a function of how much you believe porn can replace an original plot in a noir novel. I gave up after a hundred pages or so (rare for me) because I want vividly drawn characters, not caricatures.

What I learned from this book is that there are a lot of 'live for the moment, beautiful people' in South Beach. Some of them are really exceptionally attractive, and they can get their way regardless of any other personal characteristics or deficiencies. And desire can drive otherwise sensible people to do dumb things with severe consequences.

In other words, there is nothing here that has not been done in scores of previous noir novels.

So, given that the cover is pretty reflective of what the book is, why did I pick it up? Because Michael Connelly, who has written only one weak book (Chasing the Dime) and a whole slew of fantastic ones praised Cruel Poetry to the hilt.

Everyone's entitled to their own opinion, but I think he really missed it on this one.
