India made Rudyard Kipling. What does India today make of Kipling?

Only eight months ago, in October 2011, Howard J. Booth, lecturer at the University of Manchester, published THE CAMBRIDGE COMPANION TO RUDYARD KIPLING. In addition to his own excellent editorial Introduction, Howard Booth has collected penetrating monographs in English by 13 authors from America, Scotland, England, New Zealand, India and Italy -- including his own Chapter 10, "The later short fiction.".

The thirteen specialists discuss Kipling's explosive 1889 arrival from India to London by way of the USA. They probe Kipling as spokesman for and critic of the British Empire. One showcases, as well, the extraordinary and rarely noticed relationships of Rudyard Kipling with the USA (which produced his closest male friend, his wife, their Vermont-born children and more); another flags his pioneering fascination with technology and science fiction. Also tackled are Kipling's attitudes toward war, men v. women, children (THE JUNGLE BOOKS, KIM, JUST SO STORIES, etc.) and the varied "ventriloquist" voices in which he spoke experimental prose and poetry. Rudyard Kipling (1865 - 1936) was born in Bombay, India, lived there for six years and and returned from England and worked there aged 16 - 23 as a journalist and editor in two cities of Queen Victoria's Indian Raj: Lahore and Allahabad. During his journalistic years he published hundreds of poems, essays and short stories. After his marriage and especially during his years living in Vermont (1892 - 1996) where he wrote the two JUNGLE BOOKS, Rudyard Kipling wrote again and again of India. Not much later he published his masterpiece of India, KIM (1901).

Kipling arrived in London in late 1889. Almost immediately his Indian-set "Ballad of East and West" was published. He was overnight the talk of London. He dominated the year 1890. He made British India known to Britons and Americans. In London he published THE NAULAHKA: A STORY OF WEST AND EAST (1892) in which he imagined the mutual cross-cultural incomprehension when a young woman and man from Colorado spent several months among native royalty in Rajputana.

India is mentioned, if memory serves, in every single one of the 13 monographs. Kipling's India is singled out in four:

Chapter 2. India and empire by John McBratney,
Chapter 9. Kim by Patrick Brantlinger,
Chapter 11. Kipling and postcolonial literature by Bart Moore-Gilbert,
and
Chapter 13. Reading Kipling in India by Harish Trivedi.

All thirteen essays are of very high quality. Let Trivedi's serve as a good example for all. Trevi has taught English at the Universities of Chicago and London. He is a fixture of the University of Delhi. His basic question is: how well do today's Indians know Rudyard Kipling? The English made themselves the paramount power in India from 1757 to 1947. According to the 2001 census only 226,449 Indians declared English their mother tongue. Even Oriya, the tenth most widely spoken language in India, had 33 million native speakers. "No more than one percent of the Indian population (NOTE: of more than one billion) can, or is likely to, read a book in English for pleasure. However, even one percent of the Indian population is more than ten million people" (p.189). Among the educated elite, readers of Rudyard Kipling included independent India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru as well as his mentor Mohandas Gandhi himself. Some "post-colonial" Indians attack Kipling. Others, notably Sudhakar Marathe of the University of Hyderabad passionately promote him. Many Indian writers have clearly been influenced by Kipling.

In conclusion, Professor Harish Trivedi reminds us that Kipling's first audience was British men and women resident in India. He might be surprised that today's Indians read him at all -- with love, hate and admiration.

Editor Booth brings the volume to a conclusion with Further Readings in Kipling's own works, with Kipling collections, editions, biographical studies and criticism as well as with a 7-page Index. A A SENSUAL, EROTIC ROMATIC ADVENTURE MUST READ

From the Depths deserves a star for being more than the typical 15 to 20 pages prevalent in this genre. However my thorough enjoyment of this story results from far more than the story's "length" (pardon the pun). From the Depths is an explicitly erotic romance action adventure that stirred the fully gambit of my emotions which included arousal, dismay, loathing, sadness, empathy, joy, anger, elation.... You get the idea! :-) The story has a somewhat compelling plot, a Smoking Hot Hero, a Heroine who is beautiful inside and out, a soulless villain, tones of hot sex, action, romance and adventure. We are given enough character development to be thoroughly invested in and empathize with the Hero and Heroine's plight and long for their triumph. This story is definitely for adults and not for the faint of heart or the prudish! This is one that I will definitely reread and I encourage you to give it a try if explicitly erotic romance is your cup of tea! Bravo and thank you MS Anthony! I look forward to reading more of your work!

High Seas Erotica

Life on the high seas never goes as planned, as we can see in today's headlines. Harkening back to the days of old, this is a love story that encompasses passion from both sides of the gender spectrum. Kidnapped, those taken aboard this pirate ship, are brutalized. While there is brutality, kindness, passion, and love from the most unlikely sources are found.
The characters come alive nicely off the page, without falling into cliched stereotypes. The Caribbean provides a wonderful backdrop to a story filled with passion and the search for belonging.

About the Author

Eileen M. Julien is Professor of Comparative Literature, African American and African Diaspora Studies, and French and Italian at Indiana University Bloomington. She is Chairperson of the Department of Comparative Literature and author of African Novels and the Question of Orality (IUP, 1992).

Lush, smart snapshots of a New Orleans girlhood

This is one of the most enjoyable New Orleans memoirs I have yet encountered.

Dr. Julien grew up as part of a little known part of New Orleans culture -- the mid-century, black middle class. She has gone on to be a professor of French and Italian, and of African Diaspora Studies, at Indiana University. She is a keen, smart-witted observer and her various random memories of childhood are gems of delight, heart-break, mystery and discovery. Her descriptions of the homemade New Orleans cuisine of her childhood is worth the price of the book alone.

Most of her vignettes are 1 or 2 pp. in this 125pp. work. The photos and cover art are wonderful. I bought my signed copy at Maple Street bookstore in the Carrollton neighborhood last week. I can't wait to go to the book reading at PJ's Coffee on Maple in September.

I really wish Dr. Julien would move back to New Orleans. The city needs her deep understanding of the New Orleans soul now more than ever.

Any collection strong in African-American memoirs or discussions of black experiences in urban settings will find TRAVELS WITH MAE: SCENES FROM A NEW ORLEANS GIRLHOOD to be a top pick. I really enjoy this book because it highlights a part of New Orleans culture and community that is little known--the black middle class. Eileen writes with clarity and heart and invites the reader into her experience. In the intimacy of that invitation, one can find oneself and share profound meaning. What a gift this book is to readers everywhere--especially those interested in memoirs, biography, and history!

The title pretty much says it.

There is no option for me to give it 3.5 stars. I would really give it about 3.75 out of 5.
Waring has put out other books on making folk instruments, but they all seem to be updates of the same book. This one is different and has some really fun stuff in it.
Some of the projects are better suited to kindergarten activities than to a book on making musical instruments. I don't think a lot of the rubber band and shoebox zither, for example. On the other hand, there are plenty of fun ideas in here, too.
I like the section on complex instruments. The Irish harp is a really good design for a beginner's harp if your kids (or you) just want to play with the concepts of a harp. The cardboard fiddle is just plain fun. The spike fiddle (Chinese erhu) is also a cool thing to include.
I have only two major complaints about this book. First, there is almost no information about the guages of strings or tuning that Waring used on his. He says things like "experiment with different gauges of fishing line to find the sound you like best." This frustrates me a lot. How am I supposed to finish the instrument and play it if I have to spend all weekend stringing, unstringing, restringing and messing with it?
The second complaint is that there is next to no information on playing. This is the failing of most books on making simple musical instruments, but it still bugs me. I don't know how to play an erhu, so why would I bother making one with no clue what to do with it? Same for a lot of the other instruments in this book.
Okay, I really sound like I'm ripping the book, but I just want other folks to be warned about the failings. Overall, it is full of fun ideas. A friend who does daycare work thought it would be a great addition to the library at her workplace. I'm having fun with some of the ideas just for my personal goofing around. And if my kids thrash them, so what? Cardboard is cheap or even free.

Cardboard and more instrument fun

Fun is what the book is about and Dennis Waring accomplished that and more in this easy to read attractive book. I thought some of the earlier instruments in the book lacked some in guidelines for fret placement and neck length, but later projects which are more advanced are more clear and concise. I had to reseach what a pentatonic scale was for instance. That's not such a bad thing when I think about. I also had trouble understanding his description of the southern Indian instrument called a veena. My research showed the instrument to have fixed frets not moveable frets like it's northern cousin the sitar. These are minor issues, the book is not intended to be a thesis on world instruments. For parents, educators, and just people who enjoy building things with easy to find materials, with a minimum of tools, this book will keep you busy for quite some time. Innovative usage of materials and a friendly appoarch to the subject matter will give the reader hours, if not more, of enjoyment. Why am I typing when I could be off to the local lumber yard finding just the right piece of wood for that Chinese moon guitar?

Interesting and unique concept, well worth your time.

I recently had this book recommended to me (I know it is "older") based on my own experience reading Turtledove and actually reading this author. I mentioned that I read Dies the Fire maybe a decade ago and a friend asked if I had read this, I admitted I had never even heard of it even though it was written before.

This is one of those that like the Flux Capacitor you don't really ask how or why, you just go with it. The point is not why but what are the implications of such an "event". In some ways certain parts seem a little more like guys sitting around (who have a decent knowledge of history) and thinking...ok if we had no electricity what we do to make it...if we had to eat...how would we feed the many...if we needed weapons what would we need to make them. One of the tough parts to swallow is that it seems all the right people with all the right knowledge and skills just so happen to be on the tiny island and just the right (or wrong) time. On the tiny island we just so happen to a lot of blacksmiths and weapons experts, we just so happen to have a ship capable of crossing the Atlantic just inside the event, we just so happen to have an astronomer capable of reading the stars to tell us exactly when we are....and so on.

But with all that, for just a good yarn that you simply need to go with and let it come to you rather than try to dissect this is a good one. One thing that makes this stand out from typical "dystopian" fiction or even time travel fiction is that we have modern society smack in the middle of rather early times. When they talk of running out of spices, my first reaction is they need to get to the mainland and find some in an abandoned city (that is how you do it in dystopian fiction) or with other issues you think of trying to reach others (other civilizations) yet society is not particularly advanced in most areas. So even trying to trade is hampered by the limitations on access even when you do travel to new areas. Interesting concept and I look forward to reading the next two parts.

Great alternative history in an original time era

Great alternative history in an original time era, with castaways stranded near what is sometimes called "the first dark age" in western civilization. The author knows their stuff, and the encounters with Bronze-age cultures and civilizations are very detailed and tied back to real history. Also, the behavior of the main characters is more consistent with being "stranded in time" than most alt-histories I have read. A good book to be stranded in time yourself - lots of detailed descriptions of how 20th century castaways could reconstruct their machines 3,000 years ago.

Alternate History at it's best

This story covers many different areas. Not only do we see a pre-history of England, we get to see politics, industry , and war. It all starts in a deeply impossible event throwing a small New England island back in time to 1250 B.C and then what follows is a believable story detailing how those individuals would service in that "new world". The greatest threat they face is the ambitions of one of their own people.

Oscar Wilde, who wrote most memorably of "beautiful untrue things," he's not. But in two or three worthy poems in his 10th collection, Feldman passes for Shelly Berman, Don Rickles or Albert Brooks, a comic talent hellbent on sentiment. Mean-spirited misfires nearly sink the book: two disgruntled memoirs of Paul Goodman ("The slugger doesn't hit on the batboy" from "Lives of the Poets"), a fungal series of satire-lets ("How can sharing bread not be true companionship?/ When a shit-eater has you dine from his dish") and a murkily critical reading of poet laureate Robert Pinsky's translation of Dante's Inferno. Feldman's better when practicing self-deprecation without simultaneously trying to even a score, as in the resolutely academic, "Oedipus Host" and "Funny Bones, or Larry Dawn's 1001 Nights in Condolandia." While his talk-show version of Oedipus at Colonus (tonight's guests: Job and Lear) isn't much wittier a concept than one of the less successful Saturday Night Live sketches, he gets points for sheer weirdness and joy at the apotheosis: "Suddenly, this big smile. It's like teeth can see." And that Larry Dawn is supposed to be a cross between Lazarus and Scheherezade somehow doesn't get in the way of the oomph of its gallows schtick. It's too bad the book doesn't make more use of the title character of the best poem here, "Heavenly Muse."

As usual, the prose and the man

defy description. To know even slightly of either is to learn a new way to read, a closer way of listening. To learn to know a little of the laughing game through the veil of pain which is possible and too probable in life, a way of preserving the candle the twelfth hour and beyond, because communication exists. And always. I highly recommend this, as all his works, as a devotional to worldkind in general, and to the singular reader in particular. Enjoy the gift.
