May be the WORST neuro book ever written!!!

This is the WORST science book I have ever brought. Here are just few of the MANY problems: 1) The text is full of grammatical and factual errors. (Note: I am talking about errors in neuroscience basics, not error due to new discoveries.) 2) The contents within each chapter are poorly organized and confusing. 3) Illustrations rarely, if ever, match the content within the text. For example, sometimes the text mentions a structure but that structure is nowhere on ANY illustrations within the chapter. 4) A shameful index. Very often there will be a neuro word I don't know and have not encountered in previous chapters. I go to the index and guess what? The index points me to the page I started with!!! 5) No glossary. He doesn't define the word in the text. He doesn't redirect with the index. You are basically going to have to grab another neuro book for the definition! 6) The title page claims 100+ color photos. Don't be fooled. That just means he added blue in the pictures. 7) Oh, did I mention there are multiple illustrations that are FLAT OUT WRONG!!! How can the editors of Springer Verlag let this be published!??!?!? Do yourself a favor. If you have this book, BURN it (or write the author for a refund)!!!! If you don't have this book, DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY!!!

Good, good book

This is my kind of neuro book. It's integrated; it's multidimensional; its logical; and it makes neuroscience as 'mathematical' as biology can get. What does that mean? Well, it makes cramming unnecessary; to quote Poincare, there are two abilities in learning mathematics: one is sheer memory for steps in a chain of reasoning; the other, in his view by far more important, and which this book facilitates, is an appreciation of the nature of the links between propositions. If these links have been appreciated, the exact identity of the steps becomes less important because, if necessary, they can be reconstructed. This is the finest neuroscience book for its level I've come across; and if I go on to win the Nobel Prize, I know who to thank.

This is a poorly written book, with many errors. It is confusing, contradictory and badly organized. Avoid if at all possible.

This anthology of classical, contemporary, philosophical and legal essays/cases focuses on legal philosophy as its own subject—rather than being a part of social/political philosophy or applied ethics. The essays within this reader focus on how law is organized and the particular philosophical issues that it raises. The book requires students to think through actual debates-many of them still currently in the courts. This updated edition contains many more legal cases that make for balanced class discussion (for example,  readings include both the majority opinion and a dissenting opinion).

 

Initial sections on legal practice, legal reasoning, and the nature of law are followed by discussions of criminal, tort, contract, property and constitutional law. Also includes strong religious freedom and equality and the constitution coverage.

About the Author

John Arthur was a professor of philosophy and director of the Program in Philosophy, Politics, and Law at Binghamton University. He was the author of The Unfinished Constitution: Philosophy and Constitutional Practice (1989), Words That Bind: Judicial Review and the Grounds of Modern Constitutional Theory (1995), and Race, Equality, and the Burdens of History (2007), among other works. He also edited the widely used ethics anthology, Morality and Moral Controversies.

William H. Shaw is professor of philosophy at San Jose State University. He is the author of Marx’s Theory of History (1978), Moore on Right and Wrong: The Normative Ethics of G. E. Moore (1995), Contemporary Ethics: Taking Account of Utilitarianism (1999), and Business Ethics (6th ed. 2008). He has edited several volumes, including (with John Arthur), Justice and Economic Distribution (2nd ed. 1994).

Terrible Binding

The binding from this publisher is horrible! I have seen three different editions and all of the binding has been broken. I borrowed the first copy of the book from the library; the second copy I have seen is the one I ordered, the 4th edition, and I know someone in class that has a brand new 5th edition. The pages were falling out of the binding in each one of these. I'm sorry I cannot offer another suggestion. If you have to have this book for a course buy the cheapest edition you can, pull each article out of the book when it falls out and staple them. Unfortunately, that's the best you can do.

A Dynamite Package

I have no need to buy or read this compilation as I was first in line to buy each of the individual books upon release. Tiffinie Helmer is one of my all-time favorite authors. Here are the reviews I posted for each story:

Reel Trouble
Almost too hot to read, but I did!
With every new book that Tiffinie Helmer produces, I proclaim it to be the best one yet, and it's true. They keep getting better and better, but this one blows the rest out of the water. It's better than all the others combined.

In nearly 40 years of reading romances, this was the first time I wasn't rooting for a happy ending -- in fact, I didn't want an ending at all. I wanted the hero, Treat Devereaux, for myself. Sure, I understand that he's fiction, but I was hooked on that man from the first time he opened his mouth.

The chemistry between Treat and Seana was sizzling. It reminded me of the chemistry between the characters portrayed by Dennis Quaid and Ellen Barkin in The Big Easy. Somebody call the Fire Department because these two are smokin' hot!

Did I happen to mention that I loved this book? I'd definitely give it more than 5 stars if that were possible. Buy it, read it, enjoy!

Bushwhacked
Holy Guacamole! This one is smokin' hot!!!
The 2nd book in Tiffinie Helmer's Wild Women of Alaska series gives us Jesse and (Erich) Sloan. It's a short book (novella) and I usually complain about those, but I don't think I could have survived any more of these two -- they are a combustible pair. I'm absolutely certain that Sloan has the testosterone of 10 average men. Jesse has quite a bit herself, being a bush pilot raised by her father, also a bush pilot. He's all man and extremely swoon-worthy, but the one thing I didn't like about him was that he always called her "Woman." C'mon, even Tarzan bothered to learn Jane's name!

Although we don't actually see them getting physical until the halfway point in the book, the whole thing was literary foreplay, from start to finish. By the time I got to "The End" I felt like I'd been "rode hard and put away wet." Now that I've recovered, excuse me while I go back to read it again...

Fireweed
Fireweed sizzles from start to finish!
I wrote a fabulous review immediately after reading this book, but you'll have to take my word for it as it seems to have disappeared somewhere out in cyberspace. So here we go again, Review 2.0:

I had my doubts going into this as to how our hero could be a convicted killer, on the run. But of course, Tiffinie Helmer never lets her readers down. The hero is a former US Marshal who was framed while investigating corruption. This is a continuation of a sub-plot from a previous story, and helps to tie up some loose ends.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and recommend it to anyone who likes a bit of mystery and suspense, and a whole lot of sizzle, in the romance books she they read.

Icebreaker
Icebreaker will leave you in puddles!
I've had a lifelong love affair with Frosty the Snowman, so this book seemed like a good fit for me. After all, it's set in North Pole, AK, in an ice-themed bar, with a heroine whose last name is "Frost." Sadly for me, Frosty never made an appearance in the book, but honestly I barely missed him.

Just out of high school and madly in love, Trixie and Logan had run off to Anchorage and eloped. It was on the long journey back home that Logan dropped his bombshell. He'd enlisted in the Army, had to be in Georgia in 3 days, and had made arrangements for her to come with him. North Pole, AK was the only home Trixie had ever known, and she didn't have any desire to live anywhere else. Thus began their first fight, and they lived "Happily Never After" for 8 long years. Now Logan's back and wants to start over. He's fighting an uphill battle on a very slippery slope.

Although the book is a short one (a novella) and missing the usual mystery & suspense one would expect from this author, it's still got all the sizzle and heat you can handle... and a few recurring characters from previous books. Guess who's having a baby???

A perfect bundle to lose yourself in

What could be better than 1 story of Alaskan women why 4 of course!! The follow up to the Wildmen of Alaska and intertwining some returning characters from the Romance on the Edge series. Its hard to choose a favorite of this Bundle there are things to love in each one. Reel Trouble Treat and women fighting with salmon. Buswhacked with a plane crash on a lake and a man you that makes you wish you were in the story with. Fireweed oh you will love this one as well . An otter who is so adorable and a couple that heats up Alaska! The final novella Icebreaker set in a town that just beckons you to book a flight.

*Starred Review* Cardenal became uncommonly well known, for a poet, when he served Sandinista Nicaragua as minister of culture (in 1994 he repudiated Sandinista leader Daniel Ortega, whose current administration harasses him). He had already made a name among poets worldwide with his exceptional poems about his homeland’s beleaguered history and natural beauty, written in a manner he dubbed exteriorismo and that responded to his acknowledged master Ezra Pound’s injunction for a poetry “austere, direct, free from emotional slither.” So doing, he bucked the confessional and surrealistic trends of mid-twentieth-century U.S. poetry, taking inspiration from other American modernists including—to note those whose work his most resembles—Whitman, Sandburg, Fearing, Rukeyser, and, among his contemporaries, Ginsburg, though he doesn’t emulate the Beat laureate’s obscenity and florid mysticism. A ladies’ man in his youth, he became a Catholic priest in 1965. Advocating a fusion of Christianity and Marxism and holding a political appointment without his bishop’s permission led to his suspension from serving mass some 20 years later. He has stuck to his guns poetically, creating a clear, absorbing, and sweeping narrative verse peppered with never merely personal asides on human love, human fears, and divine love. To read him is to learn a geographically specific but thick chapter in the history of American economic imperialism and to be confirmed in the love of God, especially by his recent, cosmic poems informed by quantum theory. --Ray Olson

About the Author
Ernesto Cardenal was born in 1925 in Granada, Nicaragua. Revolutionary activist, disciple of Thomas Merton, Roman Catholic priest, founder of the contemplative commune Our Lady of Solentiname, ambassador for the Sandinistas, Minister of Culture in post-Somoza Nicaragua, and co-founder of the international cultural center House of Three Worlds, Cardenal, on his eightieth birthday, was given the nation's highest cultural honor, the Order of Rubén Darío, by President Enrique Bolaños in 2005. The poet, publisher, and activist Lawrence Ferlinghetti, born in Yonkers, New York, in 1919, has received the Robert Frost Memorial Medal and the first Literarian Award of the National Book Foundation. He is the subject of Christopher Felver’s new film documentary, Ferlinghetti: A Rebirth of Wonder.

Castro, the Sandanistas and Hugo Chavez RAPED their nations' economies. The Nicaraguans and Venezuelans CANNOT now blame America for their continued economic disasters. Now, that diplomatic relations with Cuba are being restored, ONCE AGAIN it will be demonstrated that ONLY AMERICAN free enterprise will bring prosperity to the Cuban masses. The MOST prosperous Latin American nations ( Brazil, Argentina, etc) with the MOST free trade.
NONE of these priests will own up to the reality that traditional Iberian Catholicism brought feudalism to the southern hemisphere. Introducing Lew Archer

The literary private detective novel reached its zenith with the creation of Lew Archer, the last legitimate heir to the Chandler/Marlowe tradition. This first novel in the series is still close enough to the 1940s roots of the genre to evoke the peak period of noir fiction, and introduces some of the best writing ever to grace a mystery story. Later novels in this series, which extended into the 1970s, variably fell victim to then-trendy ideas about psychiatry that mar their realism and temper the otherwise shrewd and sympathetic voice of Lew Archer. The early books still display all the virtuosity of good writing with tight plots and a believable narrator. Kenneth Millar, who wrote under the pseudonym Ross MacDonald, has produced some of the best similes in English, and they pop up like gems in the early books. In "The Moving Target", film fans will recognize the plot from "Harper", which cast Paul Newman in the starring role. (He insisted on changing the hero's name for the movie, apparently because he doesn't like to play characters whose names start with "A"). But the narrative voice is what makes these novels something special, and that just doesn't translate to the screen. This is a great novel masquerading as a mystery.

It All Starts Here

The Moving Target, originally published in 1949, is Ross MacDonald's first Lew Archer novel. While Archer's character has yet to fully blossom, most of MacDonald's typical story devices are represented; an interconnected trail of escalating violence, innocent youth, duel identities and a twist ending that makes you rethink the entire novel.
Who kidnapped wealthy alcoholic Ralph Samson? Was it the cult leader Samson mysteriously gifted his mountain reteat to? His bitter cripppled wife? Or perhaps his youthful pilot or aging lawyer trapped in a love triangle with Sampson's daughter. It's up to Archer to find out, and take a few beatings on the way.

Mesmerizing!

This book starts out like the typical mystery novel . . . with a mystery, a detective, and the hint of trouble. However, before long, you can't help but realize this book is no typical mystery.
This book is paced as furiously as any mystery, but it carries the depth of true literature. This is simply no mystery to be solved or adventure to be told. The Moving Target is the sordid tale of a sade family the growth of a young woman.
Who knew Ross MacDonald was so good? I guess I'll have to order more books by him. If Hammett gave birth to noir and Chandler taught it how to walk, then MacDonald provided the education. I'm very impressed!
