A great story!

It's a great story of a "normal" (define "normal") family and how it got to where they are. Loved the story and especially loved the plot, I think he hit the spot by giving all the various voices and views by the different characters. As usual, the characters are amazing, Granny Joan is the perfect ironic counterpoint to otherwise heavy situations, and yet is granting us with what I think is one of the most moving episodes in the book. I liked the various points of view, and the balance between the present and the flashbacks in the past.
It reminded me of Mike Gayle, Matt Dunn, and David Nicholls, too, whose Us, we discover in Jon Rance’s blog, was an inspiration while writing this book. Also referring to his blog, I must say he provides the perfect balance between drama and humour.
I think it’s his best so far, and I thoroughly recommend it!

I absolutely loved Sunday Dinners with the Wilde family

I absolutely loved Sunday Dinners with the Wilde family! It is a fabulous read, all the more so because there are so many situations and feelings I can relate to - not The Retreat though, definitely not The Retreat - buy the book and you will see what I mean, hilarious LOL!

Once a month Greg Wilde cooks a Sunday dinner to ensure the whole family, Lizzy, Lucy, Matt, Hollie and Nan Joan get together and it's here we discover the complexities of thecharacters, alternated in each chapter detailing the highs and lows of what's going on in their lives. Jon is an amazing author, from a middle aged menopausal woman to a young teenage girl, Jon's writing is just superb!

Sunday Dinners is full of drama, sad times, humour and very very funny 'one liners' I laughed and cried throughout.

Please go buy the book, it's a MUST read!

A good read but 50% cliché

From the very beginning the writing seemed very trite- the way the family dynamics were introduced and such. I kept reading because I thought maybe it would get better...and it did to a certain extent. There is good plot development that sometimes catches you off guard but then other times you know exactly what's coming because it's straight out of a romcom movie or something. Writing aside, it's a nice story about a family that loves each other and goes through life together and also apart. One story, different perspectives approach. It's neat to see the different family members each w their own personalities and such, yet still bonded by the familial love.

Mistitled book

Unfortunately, the phrase "Java Native Interfaces" is in large letters and "with SWT/JFace" are in a much smaller font. It should have been the other way around because the complex subject of JNI is barely touched on here. I cannot comment on the SWT/JFace coverage because that was not my object, but if you are looking for a book that will tell you how to put C++ and Java code together, this one probably won't help.

Perfect for most people IMHO

I have compared this book to three others: "SWT JFace in action" (ed. Manning), "SWT: the standard widget toolkit" (ed. A. Wesley) and "The Definitive Guide to SWT and JFace" (ed. Apress). Of all these books I greatly prefer this book. All four books have similar approach, they are all acceptable for learning, but something have been better with Professional Java Native Interface with SWT/JFace.

When analyzing what that can be, I have come to the this. Li Guojie book have appropriate and very fine measure when, what and how much to present you the information. All in all he manages to enter your first program and puts it to use faster then other books, giving you earlier some starting confidence and getting you the feeling "this works for real", which is very much needed both for beginners and experienced folks. Sometimes Guojie book misses to offer information from other books, for example it does not have the typed events in table easily readable form, or it seems to be somewhat less comprehensive then the others. But it also seems to be the most practical. Maybe Li Guojie book is somewhat like situation: you ask an experienced engineer about something and he talks to you exactly what is important and stresses the right peaces of information for you. This book shows what happens when both professional and teaching abilities meats together in one person: Li Guojie.
It is quite possible that personal preference of his writing style has misguided my judgment to grade this book with 5 stars. Even than I should say all four books are excellent, but my vote goes to Li Guojie.

Practical advice: combine this book with "The Definitive Guide to SWT and JFace" to get the best of all worlds. You will appreciate me a lot for this advice!

Covers the basics, after that you're on your own

Very little information is available about using JFace. This book, like many others, gives a good beginning, but does not go beyond the beginner tutorials available from IBM and other places. The big advantage of this book over learning from free tutorials on the Web is that a consistent explanation of all the basics of JFace are here in one place. By flipping back and forth, I constructed a better overview in my mind than I had from working individual tutorials.

This book is not enough by itself to get beyond a beginner level. None of the books I have found discuss how to use the event model when you have more than a few objects to juggle, or how to communicate data between the a GUI and the other parts of a large application. By reading this book and SWT/JFace in Action: GUI Design with Eclipse 3.0 (In Action series) side by side, I got a better picture of the JFace event model than from either book alone. I noticed that both books say something about the Model-View-Controller pattern, but do not fully explain how that differs from what is provided in JFace, SWT, and related Java frameworks. JFace contains many other aspects, such as its Help system, that this book does not cover. The pages in the index of my copy were misordered. I notice the publisher, Wrox, says this book is printed on demand.

In my opinion both this and SWT/JFace in Action: GUI Design with Eclipse 3.0 (In Action series) are superior to the third easy-to-find book on JFace, The Definitive Guide to SWT and JFACE.

Rabbeinu Yonah Explained

Many people regard the Rabbeinu Yonah's "Shaarei Teshuva (Gates of Repentance)" to be a book of mussar (ethics). But it is not quite so, because the main focus of the book is what constitutes a proper repentance in the Jewish law, and what is necessary to be done beyond the letter of the law to correct one's mistakes. I found R. Feldman's translation of Rabbeinu Yonah's classic text to be superb and very lively. The edition explains well very the deep ideas upon which Rabbeinu Yonah based his text in a collection of commentaries. Additional section of supplementary notes helps one to take a fresh look and connect to other relevant mussar ideas. The text requires that one read it slowly, focusing on the essentials Rabbenu Yonah's approach to teshuvah (repentance). To help the reader Rav Feldman provided wonderful introductions and summaries for each chapter. The edition probably the best available English translation of Rabbeinu Yonah's classic.

The only drawback of the edition is that some Hebrew words in the commentary are misspelled, which makes it hard sometimes to find to right reference in the Hebrew original.
