Metal-cutting lathes, turret lathes, vertical boring machines, automatic and semiautomatic lathes, milling machines and many other types of machine tools are described. Special attention has been given to machine tools designed for the production of cutting tools. These include general and single-purpose semiautomatic precision thread-grinding machines, automatic and semiautomatic tracer-controlled lathes with hydraulic controls, jig boring machines and specialized machine tools, as well as automatic transfer machines for cutting tool production.

Volume two contains Parts Three and Four. Part Three deals with the kinematics of machine tools. This branch of machine tool design has been strictly systematized by the author and is set forth with exceptional clarity. The kinematic structures of a great many different types of machine tools, including the most complex gear-cutting machines, are analyzed by methods developed in the text which take into consideration the interrelation between the workpiece to be produced in the given machine tool. Part Four takes up hydraulic drives of machine tools. It contains all the theoretical and practical data required in the application of fluid power and control systems to machine tools.

Volume Three contains Part Five and this deals with machine tool design proper. It is a comprehensive scientific treatment of the subject and is a revised and complemented version of a previous Russian edition which has become a reliable reference book for all Soviet machine tool engineers and has been translated into French. Such questions as performance criteria, basic design data, principal specifications and the development of the kinematic scheme of a new machine tool are dealt with in great detail. Design recommendations are given as well as the necessary calculation data for the basic elements of machine tools - speed and feed gearboxes, stepless drives, rapid traverse mechanisms, spindles and spindle bearings, mechanisms for rectilinear motion, small displacement and periodic motion, reversing devices, beds columns, tables and other housing-type components, slideways and antifriction ways.

The fourth and final volume covers Automatic Machine Tools and Transfer Machines, and Machine Tool Testing and Research, Parts Six and Seven of the complete work. Part Six deals with the fundamental principles of machine tool automation, the various systems of numerical programme control that have found extensive application in modern machine tool design in the USSR and other countries. Much space has been given to automatic transfer machines, including in-line, rotary, and other types, their layout, features, design procedures, structure, and output.

Current methods of testing and investigating the geometrical, kinematic, dynamic, and operational characteristics of machine tools are considered in Part Seven. Methods of testing the quality characteristics, of determining the corresponding criteria (indices), and of using contemporary apparatus for this purpose are dealt with. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

A must-resd for any and all Phyllis Hyman fans.

I must first thank Mr. Michael for writing such an in-depth but sensitive biography of the late great Phyllis Hyman. Everything from her poverty-stricken childhood to her tumultous relationship with Arista Records' boss Clive Davis to her never-ending battle with chronic depression and bipolar disorder is covered. It's truly sad to think that someone as talented and gifted as Phyllis was unable to overcome her personal demons (despite really tring to). Sadly, we now know that (for all her beauty and talent) Phyllis was a tortured soul whose inner pain and insecurity led her to self-destructive behavior--unfortunately, those around her wouldn't (or couldn't) understand why. If you are a Phyllis Hyman fan you really should get this book but know that it IS heartbreaking as it is (to some degree) like watching a home video of her childhood up to her suicide at the age of 45. In retrospect, the real reason why Phyllis sounded so convincing on romantic ballads which dealt with pain, betrayal and lost love was because their lyrics mirrored her own experiences.

Don't be fooled by the superficial credibility that it is an authorized biography.

In short, it is not a very empathetic portrayal of Phyllis Hyman, and I think that it is slanderous. First, it must be said that writing a comprehensive biography about Phyllis Hyman would be a difficult task for the reasons that the author is unable to record her perspective and explanations of the events of her life. Thus, much of the content of the book is speculation.

Unfortunately, the author supplants the introspective and retrospective point of view of Phyllis with the symptomatology of bipolar Disorder and Depression, and commentary (or in other words, gossip) from her acquaintances and peers; some of whom seem to have very low estimations of her character and unsympathetic (sometimes harsh) opinions of her plight. Largely missing from this portrayal is any artistic, compassionate, imaginative or speculative representation of Phyllis Hyman's experience as herself: an American Black woman -who was born without sufficient security into a world that was and continually is abusive, greedy, racist, sexist, and violent -or in one word, inhumane. In place of any comprehensive, or relatable speculation about Phyllis' experience and its effects on her disposition and personality, the author mostly summates her life to alcoholism, drug abuse, salaciousness, and outrageous and outlandish fits. This egregious lifestyle is the attributed to her childhood -or bad parenting by the author, which is said to have contributed to her low self-esteem, mental illness, and her suspect character. Though it must be said that the author does give a general account of the music industry and its associates that Hyman encountered, and suggest factors that may have contributed to Hyman's commercial inviability. In addition, there are some accounts of her acts of kindness.

However, the author seems to marginalize and simplify Phyllis Hyman's experience of the world (and that of those around her), and gives an undeveloped description of the world in which she lived. For instances, Hiriam Bullock (PH Factor guitar player) mentions that a club owner made sexual advance at her and that after this she was motivated to leave Miami. The author gave no speculation as to what effect this may have had on her, and in general no contextual threads are drawn through the book, only personal ones -that mostly propose her inconsistencies and irregularity. This deficiency of context is not masked by the intimation that her life was sealed into a vacuum of fate, that the nature of her life and death was an inevitable result of her genetics and disposition.

Essentially, the author fails to make his book useful in general, but also to anyone that is invested in a comprehensive understanding of Phyllis Hyman, and her significance to culture and the human experience. I imagine that those with a genuine interest in Phyllis Hyman would expect that the book would reflect on how her experience and music as a testament to some redeemable aspect of her cultural influence, and to vividly illuminate to us some intricacies of our own experience. But, instead the relevance of Hyman's life and her work are relegated to a haphazard cautionary tale of innate mental illness (take your meds and love yourself), and thus we are given an oversimplified version of life.

It is my opinion that the book was poorly written: it is somewhat disorganized and repetitious, and failed to captivate my attention (after reading the first few chapters, I skim through it, driven by my curiosity alone), and it appeared not to be edited at all. In addition, it does not tell you anything that a google search would not reveal.

I think that the buy would be a waste of money and time. I would buy a CD in place of it. I paid $50 for the book and threw it in the trash. As one more out of circulation.

About the Author
Allison Hawn was born in Idaho and has spent her life obtaining adventures. The daughter of a musician, she was brought up all over the United States with occasional dalliances into foreign lands. She holds a degree in psychology from Northwest Nazarene University in Nampa, Idaho, where she also had a weekly humor column with a small time newspaper "The Crusader." "Life is a Circus Run by a Platypus" is her first creative published work. Her second book, "Life is a Pirate Ship Run by a Velociraptor" is due to be released through Sweatshoppe Publications later this year. She currently resides in Spokane, Washington, where she works with the homeless, domestic violence victims, and other disenfranchised populations, but calls a myriad of locations home.

Hail O Great and Wonderful Platypus!!

In life, we have two choices. We either laugh or cry. Allison Hawn has chosen to laugh and not only does she laugh, she makes us laugh too with this book of very short stories that pokes fun at many of the lemons life seems to have thrown her way. It is well written and edited and each story stands on its own for those who wish to nibble on the sweet succulent whole. They are also well-connected by Allison's straight-to-the-point telling of a story, not to mention her blunt sense-of-humor and fast as lightning wit, and go down well as a whole for those who simply cannot stop at one. And believe me, you'll find it hard to stop at one. Five stars, and a hell of a lot of laughs. PS Being an artistic type, I tend to first judge a book by its cover. This book deserves an extra star for its cover which is one of the better ones, making it SIX stars and a hell of a lot of laughs.

I read the first two chapters of Allison's book and was blown away with her understated humor! Easy to read and relate to! This book would be a great pick-me-up in short bursts....not unlike Erma Bombeck.

Great comedy!!!!

Writing comedy is really hard, believe me. Reading bad comedy is even harder, believe me. Often the only person laughing is the author. Humour is incredibly subjective. And I'm a really grumpy critique of humour. Which is why, when I found myself laughing out loud (yes, literally a LOL) reading Life is a Circus Run by a Platypus, written by Allison Hawn, I knew I'd found a gem.
You know when something really funny happens and you excitedly try and tell your friends all about it, only for it to fall on death ears (and you really hate your friends when they don't laugh, don't you)? When you're forced to deliver the immortal line 'you had to be there for it to be funny?' Well, Allison doesn't experience this. Not one bit. Yes, she has the most incredibly bizarre and wonderfully weird experiences you could ever imagine. But then, and this is the really crucial part, she has the ability to deliver these stories to you in a unique and individual way, that will leave you laughing more than if you really were there

Jadhav, head of economic research for the Reserve Bank of India, is a member of India's Dalits--or untouchables--a group that numbers 165 million. His moving memoir is a tribute to his parents, who made it their goal to educate their children, especially his father, Damu, who stood up to the caste system. Amazing account of journey out of prejudice

I just received this book and ended up reading the entire book in one night -- it was that enthralling. This is a true account of a Dalit ("untouchable") family in India. The author -- Narendra Jadhav -- born into a Dalit sub-caste, has recorded the journals his father had kept of his parents' resistance against ancient prejudice.

Inspired by the Dalit leader, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, Damu Jadhav (the author's father) finally had reached his limit on all of the indignities that had been thrust upon him by the higher-caste authorities. He refused to perform an unconscionable duty demanded of him by a village official; for this refusal, he was brutally beaten. This was the beginning of the family's quest for freedom. There are stirring accounts of demonstrations, led by Dr. Ambedkar, where Dalits (including Damu Jadhav and his wife) had demanded their human dignity. This account relates the Jadhav family's struggles, set against the Dalit human rights struggle.

Finally the reader sees how the Jadhav family emerged in triumph, having escaped their onerous discriminatory conditions, going through all sorts of conditions to make sure that the children would all receive a good education. Dr. Narendra Jadhav grew up to became an esteemed economist and his brothers and sisters also became eminent in their fields of study.

In the cities, prejudice against the Dalits has greatly diminished. Unfortunately, in India's vast rural areas, caste-based discrimination and violence continues to exist in far too many instances. This book lays out a foundation for ways to continue the fight for Dalit human rights.

Good story of about a family challenging the system

This is a good night time read.The author tells the story about his family confronting the caste system in India.It is not a historical account, but the author lets us know how,thru the years, the "upper" classes in India have treated the "dalits" .The author's father deserves all the credit in the world because he was the one who initiated this challenge against the caste system.The dalits still have a long way to go but looks like their situation is improving.The author's account is simple and to the point, altough i think that, at times, the author strays a little too much of the subject giving us a lot of information that is not that relevant to the story.But all in all is a good book that helps us understand and appreciate how people in other parts of the world struggle while we have it easy here in the United States.

Not really what I expected, I was looking for a better understanding of the caste system.

I'm Indian but I grew up here in the US and I wanted to learn about the caste system as I was raised Christian and my family does not believe in this backwards tradition. I've heard stories about the caste system but I thought this book would give me a better understanding of it's origins and ideology.

The book is actually very easy to read and you could finish it off in a day or two. The language is easy to understand and it flows very well. The story being told is the author's translation of his parents recollections during the early 1900's under the caste system in India. The book starts out well and hooks you immediately. The beginning story of how the author's father was beaten and treated as less-than-human really helps you to see how cruel the system is. Unfortunately that is really the only part in the book when you are able to see the cruelness of this system. The rest of the book reads more like a narrative. Somewhere in the middle, I started to lose my interest because I was expecting to see more of this cruel injustice but the author started discussing how his parents were walking on the beach, having kids, and traveling back and forth to Mumbai. That didn't sound like oppression to me. As an Indian, I've visited India and I have seen low caste people get treated like garbage and it breaks my heart because, as Americans, we just can't understand that in this society. I was expecting to understand why they do this in India but I didn't get that in this book. Actually, the first thing that came to my mind was that the way the author portrayed the caste system wasn't nearly as bad as what African-American's had to go through here in the US not so long ago. In reality, I know the caste system in India is far worse and inhuman but the author simply did not portray it as such.

Sure, the author's parents fought to stand up for what is right and vowed to give their kids a better life but there are countless other people in India who's story is very different. I was thinking I was going to get some insight into that. It's great that the author wrote a book about an untouchable who succeeded and rose above the oppression but I think the story would have been so much more effective if we understood more about what the caste system is all about, why people still believe in it, and why India just can't get rid of it.

Overall, it was a decent read but I didn't come away with a good understanding of the caste system after reading it. Maybe if you are not Indian, this might be a good starting point but if you are buying this book to understand the Indian caste system, you will be disappointed.

Also, the epilogue which is written by Jadhav's daughter really didn't add to the book as it seemed more like she was gloating about her accomplishments. I know she was trying to portray that she, living in America, does not have to deal with the injustices that her grandparents had to but it just didn't come across as such.

I'd borrow this book first.

Chords and Scales book

good book for beginners basic info on chords and scales, however it is a bit basic and the beginner will find the book not very useful after a month or less. If you are considering this book, you are probably serious about learning and if you are learning theory you will zip through this info quickly.

I like the book, but if you are serious look for a bigger more in depth book. If you just want something light and basic go for this. It does have a good list of most used chords though.

I have also purchased guitar 1, guitar 2, and the guitar songbooks from this "fast track" series. The guitar 1 and 2 fast track instruction books are great! Highly recommended, the best I've gone through. Song book 1 and this chord book, not so much.

I like the layout of this book! I have a lot of books and was looking for something light & easy to refer to quickly. It's a basic reference manual and great for beginning guitarists but also a good reference tool for guitarists of all levels.

Not bad for $10.
