A wonderful introduction, or re-introduction, to Awa Kenzo's life and philosophy

Informative, readable and inspiring account of Kenzo's life as well as an excellent anthology of his actual teachings. I loved John Stevens' way of explaining complex Zen terms in simple English: e.g., kensho - "see your nature" or "look into your nature;" jobutsu - "become Buddha;" and the ultimate Zen experience, satori, which Stevens explains means literally "remove distinctions," and which he, along with many others, translates as "enlightenment." This is great stuff for anyone interested in Japanese language and culture as well as providing a springboard for deeper investigations of Zen, of archery as a form of "practice" and of martial arts in general. Includes detailed notes on sources and an excellent bibliography. Highly recommended.

John Stevens produces another one of his find vignettes of prominent Japanese martial artists. The field of Kyudo is not well known in the U.S. and anything that can be done to remedy that should be. I believe this book is best read alongside Herrigel's "Zen and the Art of Archery."

A cogent defense of six-day creation.

This is a big book — some 700 pages. It is not something you can read quickly. But it is a great blessing from the Lord that he has provided such an eloquent and cogent defender of the historical truthfulness of Genesis 1-11. One of the features that stood out to me is his command of the Hebrew text of Genesis. Right now there is a lot of confusion in even the more conservative Reformed and Presbyterian denominations (such as the PCA, the OPC and the URC). It concerns me greatly that various contradictory and 'newly invented' views are considered acceptable. I keep praying that the Lord will give us Seminary teachers who will recover the wisdom of the Westminster Assembly which said this in their Shorter Catechism; Q.9. What is the work of creation? A. The work of creation is, God's making all things of nothing, by the word of his power, in the space of six days, and all very good. If the remnant churches in North America do recover this simple and essential confession, I believe it will be in no small degree, because of the powerful testimony of Dr. Sarfati.

Almost did not buy it, but now it is my go-to commentary on Genesis

I do verse by verse expository preaching. To prepare myself for Genesis, I purchased 3 high-rated "conservative" commentaries that I researched online. I did this to glean from an array of sources. "The Genesis Account" was a fourth one I purchased, but was hardly mentioned in reviews and commentary lists. Now it has become my "go to" resource which I did not know would happen. Jonathan Sarfati not only shows scholarly exegetical considerations and stays with the literal recognition of a six day creation and a real worldwide Noah flood, but also weaves in information which meets and refutes the philosophy that the world must be seen through the Old Age influence lens of naturalists influencing Christians, instead of the other way around. He also touches on "form" and "documentary" philosophies in a way that brings out the most important considerations. So on p33 where he says "It is primarily a history book" he shows this to be true, and gives evidence to see it as accurate history at that.

Unlike, for example one of the commentaries I bought which is "The Book Of Genesis" by Victor Hamilton which is touted as one of the best "conservative" commentaries on Genesis by a lot of folks, I have not found any disappointing surprises with Sarfati's work. I think of Hamilton's odd assertion on p. 53 under Problems In Interpretation; Hamilton wrote, "And whoever wrote Gen. 1 believed he was talking about literal days. Now, over the last few centuries science has shown that it is absurd and preposterous to think that the universe was created in one week."

But with Sarfati's information and insights, I see others like Hamilton making absurd and preposterous moves with such bold naturalist "perspectives" of scientific data, and then Sarfati quickly going for checkmate in his more carefully handled insights into what science has shown. Sarfati did the same with Hamilton's "whoever wrote Gen. 1," making a strong case for the classic authorship of Moses.

Whether your presupposition is long age, or short age--poetic or literal, a mixture, or an "I don't know," I recommend getting this book. It has valuable insights to add to your thinking process.

Fantastic all in one resource

Sarfati's new commentary is a fantastic all in one resource to defend the first 11 chapters of the Bible. If you have questions about or hear an objection to a certain passage in Genesis 1-11, simply open Sarfati's commentary to the appropriate chapter to find excellent analysis and thorough documentation. This commentary is also very readable to those who are interested in science, although it is not too science-heavy for a layperson to understand due to Sarfati's brilliant style of writing.

A Parting Glimpse Of The Infinite

"Tibetan Sage" is the last book T. Lobsang Rampa wrote, his fond farewell to his loyal audience and a last attempt to silence his critics and expose fraud conducted in his name. Rampa died in 1981, just a few months shy of his 71st birthday, and "Tibetan Sage" was published the previous year. In the epilogue of this, his final book, he courageously speaks of his passing as being both inevitable and soon.

And what a wonder his last book is. It is full of the things that keep one riveted to Rampa's spiritual struggle, the essential core of truth that makes it impossible to turn away and accuse him of lies and fakery.

The book begins with Rampa as a very young man, not quite at the level of Buddhist monk but still a promising student. With his mentor, the Lama Mingyar Dondup, he sets out to rescue a hermit overseeing a small hermitage in the mountains of Tibet. Alas, a sudden earthquake topples the hermit to his death, and does serious injury to the Lama Mingyar Dondup's legs, who finds himself trapped under a boulder.

In the process of freeing his mentor, the young Rampa stumbles onto a secret compartment in the mountainside and carries the Lama inside. The compartment houses a flying saucer, which Rampa explores with the Lama and which will become the primary setting for the rest of the book.

Much to Rampa's surprise, the Lama is already familiar with the languages used by the aliens and with much of their technology. The ship has lain dormant for a million years, yet everything is still pristinely clean and functional. Some alien occupants are discovered frozen at their control consoles in a state of suspended animation. They remain that way throughout Rampa's story, and the book's real focus is on Rampa and the things he learns there, not on coversations with aliens.

There is often a dramatic shift of consciousness associated with a human being actually boarding a UFO called "the Oz Effect." It is given that name because the extreme contrast between the two environments resembles that moment in "The Wizard of Oz" when Dorothy crosses over from the black and white world of Kansas to the Technicolor land of Oz. This is certainly applicable to the changes Rampa undergoes in "Tibetan Sage," as he witnesses holographic recordings of the formation of the planet up through the Second World War, all stored in the mythic Hall of Records and accessed onboard the flying saucer. At times, Rampa feels as though he is living and breathing in those previous and even future times, a degree of realism still not attainable by our own current technology. Sadly, most of what he sees involves bloody warfare both among people and between the gods themselves, another testimony to alien truthfulness.

In his introduction, Rampa adamantly declares that "Tibetan Sage" and in fact all of his books are the literal and unvarnished truth and not mere science fiction. His deep convictions in that regard may indicate that he is another in the long line of "literary abductees," people who write about bizarre spiritual experiences without consciously being aware that they are interacting with an alien species that is strange and mysterious yet basically benign. As with most abductees, Rampa never doubts that something real has actually happened to him, and the things he has in common with other abductee accounts are too numerous to mention, but include being shown holographic images of the world drowning in the flames of warfare and being in a dreamlike state surrounded by various alien machines whose function defies imagination.

"Tibetan Sage" may be Rampa's final book, but it remains the story of a soul in progress and thus is never quite finished. To read the book is to marvel at the blurring of the lines between the alien abduction phenomenon and the nature of the sacred, and one wishes Rampa well as he soldiers on to his astral paradise and beyond.

Who Wrote This?

Having read The Third Eye, Doctor From Lhasa and a couple of Rampa's volumes later volumes, I was keenly interested in what I expected to be his detailed account of wonders and esoteric information found in one of the hidden intra-mountain caves/tunnels mentioned briefly in other works.

I was puzzled at first, then more and more disappointed as I read the first couple of chapters. Finally, I stopped reading in utter disgust.

Whoever wrote this slop could not have been the Lobsang Rampa who wrote the other well-known volumes. In Tibetan Sage, Rampa comes across as a simpleton and the Lama Mingyar Dondup as a condescending co-investigator. The syntax and writing style are clumsy and primitive, quite unlike Rampa's mature prose. There is no clear link that associates the events described in this book with other events in his life, except that he was still in training at Chakpori. The writer shows no insight, no reflection as would be the case of a mature chronicler recalling a major episode from his early teens. And the events/information described don't fit well with the knowledge and beliefs described in his other books.

Either all his other works had the benefit of competent editors while this one was left as a true example of his fifth-grade skill in Engligh composition, or this book is a fraudulent attempt to capitalize on Rampa's mystique. The latter seems more likely.

Save your money and skip this perversion of the T. Lobsang Rampa story.

Not nearly as good as the first books

Having read about half of Lobsang Rampa's books more than 30 years ago (and loving them!), I decided to try this last one. It is quite disappointing, and almost seems like someone else wrote it! The content is weird (not that the original books weren't), but it seems like the whole style of writing is completely different, too! His first three books were gems, and this just doesn't measure up. I don't know what the problem is, but would recommend buying the first books instead of this crazy one.

Great Text Teaches 30+ years

With all due respect to the negative reviews, this book is the best treatment of Classical Electrodynamics at the GRADUATE PHYSICS PH.D. level that exists. It is clearly written from two points of view, that of a classical special functions treatment of the subject that is interlaced with deep insights from the perspective of a Physicist. Both of which are beyond standard treatments and rely upon one another. Thus it can be difficult to approach if unprepared with a thorough background in both special function theory and undergraduate elctro-magnetism under your belt. It is necessary to complete every problem to achieve the basic fundamental level required of most of the top ranked graduate programs. Average time per problem should be between 1/2-3 hours of hard work that clearly reinforces and extends the subject matter. Approaching this subject outside of a graduate program is possible with significant help and other resources. After nearly 30 years, I have returned to my copy time and again for help in conducting research. While somewhat outdated, the use of Gaussian units was typical of theorists as it made keeping track of annoying units and symbols easier. Since there is a lengthy conversion guide in the appendix, one sees little issue with using it to convert to another system. In short, all complaints should be ignored.

Jackson should be cloned

This is the best physics book I have ever studied, and absolutely indispensable to anyone who has to solve real-world problems in electrodynamics!
Jackson's treatment of physics is elegant and crystal-clear throughout, and he generously includes material on Legendre functions, spherical harmonics, etc. that undergraduates may not have been exposed to. However, when it comes to the mathematical verifications needed to read the book with understanding, he doesn't hold your hand. This is as it should be! Physics is not the same as mathematics, but the latter is an essential tool that every physicist must master.
If you go through the book conscientiously checking and deriving all the equations, you'll end up filling a large notebook (amazingly, I didn't find any errors -- this book is rock-solid reliable). But the great thing is, you'll never have to do this again! Then you can reread Jackson without getting snowed under by what are essentially routine, but sometimes tedious, mathematical verifications; and you'll be free to savor the physics and really appreciate how great the book is. If you want some worked problems, look at The Classical Theory of Fields in the Landau-Lifshitz series. At the end of each chapter in Jackson there are excellent problems that will test your understanding.
The negative reviews of Jackson can only indicate a problem with how physics is taught in graduate school. Jackson's book has to be read carefully at least twice, and preferably N times; perhaps this is too much to expect from harassed graduate students in physics. I'm a mathematician by training and was able to study Jackson's book on my own and enjoy it without being rushed for time or having to worry about being tested. With the possible exception of the volume on quantum mechanics by Landau and Lifshitz, which again requires a lot of mathematical verifications, Jackson's book has no rivals.
It's a pity he didn't write any other physics textbooks.

The Ubiquitous Physics-student's text on Electromagnetism!

This is the textbook every physicist knows about. The ubiquitous, maroon book: and it's right here at Amazon.com! We must all relish in the headaches this text gives us. It is one of those few gems that physics students both abhor and treasure as one of their most valuable resources. Often terse in its mathematical derivations; but by design we see how they do not interfere with the most important aspect of the topic: the interpretation of the mathematical results -- the "physics" behind the math.

Most of the problems in the book are "highly stimulating."

As many professors tell their students: "you are not a physics student if you haven't lived through Jackson's electrodynamics."

About the Author
Stephen Kinzer is the author of "The Brothers", " Reset", "Overthrow", "All the Shah s Men", and other books. An award-winning foreign correspondent, he served as the "New York Times" s bureau chief in Turkey, Germany, and Nicaragua and as the "Boston Globe" s Latin America correspondent. He is a senior fellow at the Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs at Brown University and writes a column on world affairs for "The Boston Globe". He lives in Boston.
