From the Foreword: Factually, I’ve had seven, eight and nine thousand dollar weeks in the truck. And my best week ever was nearly $11,000 dollars! That’s one truck, one driver, seven days on the road, ELEVEN THOUSAND DOLLARS! My best month ever was nearly thirty grand. And because my expenses tend to be rather low as a percentage of income, I’m able to walk away from the truck for weeks at a time with the bills paid and a pocket full of cash. It’s great to enjoy life without worrying about going to work every day, many years before other professions allow you to retire.

The following chapters contain the keys to my success and will guide you to the, “BIG MONEY” in trucking. Interestingly enough though, I believe one could use my success principles to take their present business or occupation from a full time job, into more of a part time job, with a full time income, as the principals are somewhat universal to business and success. And if you’re already into trucking, this can help you quickly add thousands to your bottom line.

From Chapter 3: Before I bought my first big truck I knew one thing; I knew that I needed to be highly successful in this business and not just “average” or I might just as well continue to drive someone else’s truck. Another thing I knew was that if other truckers were out there making it on a buck a mile or less, and they were, I could be much more profitable and therefore more successful if I consistently stayed “above average”. So that was part of my thinking as I was preparing to buy my first truck. Stay above average!

Looking back at the beginning of this whole operation I continue to find one thing very interesting. After I bought my truck, I worked from the middle of October to about a week before Christmas that year (about 8 weeks total, home on weekends), then I took six full weeks off! I didn’t go back to work until February 6th of the next year! I didn’t plan on taking all that time off, it just kind of happened. But what is curious to me was that I had the ability to take the time off; six weeks, without working. And that surprised even me!

The plan for my business from the outset was to make more money in less time so as to allow for a good bit of time off, but taking 6 full weeks off while only having started my trucking business just 8 weeks prior is a pretty fantastic statistic if you ask me.

So how was I able to take the time off so quickly and what was integral to my to my success you ask? From the very beginning, I did the following things…..

From Chapter 4: In the months before I bought my first big truck I was looking for opinions and advice from various people I knew who were somewhat expert about the business of trucking. One day I was at the O' having a few beers when I started talking with a guy who at one time had a fleet of coal trucks. We'll call him R.T. Over a beer or two, R.T. told me told me the principle of how he calculated his profits and expenses for his trucks and how those calculations were based on percentages (%) (of what each truck made) and how using this principle, he grew from one truck to many. This principle must have worked because he had many dozens of trucks before he sold out for big $$$$$ in the 90s.

Disappointed. No valuable info.

Extremely disappointed. The author simply tells you not to run cheap freight, to run hard, and then take time off work until you need money and then go back to running hard again. He appears to have no financial savvy and talks about taking loans for things such as four wheelers. He seems to admit he works hard so he can be lazy. Dave Ramsey would shred this guy to pieces. I did read it cover but found no real useful information.

I have been driving a company truck for 3.5 years trying to make money by driving more miles. I have been averaging over 120,000 miles a year for the last two years, but have been struggling financially. This book explained to me what I have been doing wrong and gave me a direction in which to go to make the kind of money I want to make. It gave me hope that i can be a financial success as a trucker. Ah! There You Are...

This began as a radio play in the early 70's and was adapted to the stage in the late 80's. The story is terrific.

The play is structured moving back in time from 1972 to 1914 and then forward again from 1914 to 1972. It concerns three artists who have shared their lives together, including apartments and studios and the affections for one woman.

The play is funny, witty like so much of Stoppard, absurd and in concluding a bit sad. I would love to see this performed and recommend it as a read too.

If this was to be produced on stage I would say there are some complex technical necessities. Perfectly timed looping tape recorder and removeable balastrade/railing being the most central. If done well, as written, this would be a splendid show.

About the Author
Clifford B. Hicks served as a U.S. Marine in the South Pacific during World War II, where he earned the Silver Star. After the war, he joined the writing staff of Popular Mechanics, eventually serving as Editor-In-Chief. Mr. Hicks also wrote science, health and technology stories for several other national magazines. He penned 16 books for children, including the Alvin Fernald and Peter Potts series. He and Rachel, his wife of more than 60 years, had three children, eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

My favorite Alvin book!

I am the author's son. I was about the same age as Alvin is in the book when my Dad wrote this. We both shared a fascination with codes and ciphers and spent time challenging each other, etc. This book grew out of that fascination. This is my favorite of my Dad's many children's books and remains a "good read" today. The field of cryptography has changed greatly with the advent of computers, but kids still enjoy protecting their secrets and trying to "crack" those of their friends. Although I may be a bit biased, I give this my highest rating! -- Dave Hicks

This is one of my favorite books from childhood. I think of it often and it has even had a positive influence on my career. I am delighted to see that it is still in print. This book is an excellent choice for inquisitive young people.

"Alvin's Secret Code" twines a good introduction to cryptography with a Civil War mystery and is thoroughly enjoyable throughout. When Alvin and his friend Shoie discover an encoded message, they think they're on the trail of an international spy ring in their small town (the copyright date on the book is 1963). WIth the help of Mr. Link, a former spy who is now an invalid, they are able to decode the message, and Link teaches them about a number of different codes. Alvin's and Shoie's characters are engaging, their adventures exciting, and, best of all from my point of view, the book has an appendix with a number of cryptological methods and messages for children to play with. These are wonderful brain-stretchers, and they have good practical applications even for children who don't particularly love numbers.

Wish I'd Read This Before Starting Law School - Seeing the Forest through the Trees

This book really clarifies what is important to focus on (for both law school & the bar exam), so you don't get lost in the forest of the ton of information presented to you with regard to either law school or the bar. I recommend this as a great law school prep book as well so that when you are taking your law school classes, you can more clearly see what the important topics, rules & elements are and how to write exam answers for each course/topic. The book is a little dated (even the 2013 revised version is dated & still refers to written exams instead of computerized exam-taking, etc.), so some rules and elements may have changed a bit here & there, but most of the rules & elements are still relevant. Regardless, no other book I have come across except for Tim Tyler's "Nailing the Bar" does as good of a job of weeding out what is important from the mass of information (which is either overly generalized or overly detailed) that most other law school prep and bar exam prep books & classes inundate you with. This book focuses in on what you need to know to do well on exams (law school or bar).

Good Place to Start - Not Best Quality

This book is great for those law students who want to explore the idea of writing a bar essay. Jeff Adachi breaks down the process step by step for each tested subject. What I found most valuable was the 'roadmap' of issues likely to come up for each subject, as well as a general plan for tackling and organizing these essays.

What was missing was quality and attention to detail. This book is best for those just starting the bar prep process, ideally during the last year of law school. If you start reading this and practicing during the summer of bar prep, likely not what you need. The answers are not great, but they get the job done. The 'self-grading' is terrible, and the points never add up.

Get this book to dissect the essay writing process as a whole, and then subject by subject. Get it for the practice essays and sample answers. But don't rely on it too much after the initial steps. I only used a fraction of the book, and ultimately wasn't worth the price in my opinion. The quality of the sample answers and self-grading process is not worth it.

The topic of teen pregnancy handled perfectly!

Evelyn used to be a good girl. Then her parents started having problems within their marriage and her father left them. Evelyn became angry and confused. She then made a decision to become the "bad girl" as a means of punishing her parents. Her new bad girl rep includes striving to be labeled as a slut or whore by having sex and making sure everyone knows about it, drinking, doing drugs, partying, and disobeying the rules in general.

Then, the unthinkable happens.

Evelyn is pregnant and must decide what to do about it.

Me, Him Them, and It opens up with Evelyn visiting a Planned Parenthood office, speaking with a counselor named Mary about the fate of the life inside her.

But making a decision is next to impossible for Evelyn, because all she wants is for things to go back to normal.

Okay, I had some problems with this book. Mainly, the protagonist. If you want a book with an infuriating main character, this is your book. Evelyn is probably my most hated protagonist out of ALL the books I've ever read. I can't even put it into words, it's that bad. This girl takes zero responsibility for her actions. She drinks after she finds out she's pregnant. She tells the fetus she hates it on every other page. She blames the guy who got her pregnant (her "non-boyfriend"), her parents, her friends, the world, but never herself. Not only that, but this girl is startlingly idiotic! Let me show you a few examples via quote:

"I guess all girls who come here are too worked up to read about the various machines that will be shoved up their vaginas in the next few months, no matter which option they choose." (In reference to Mary trying to get her to read pamphlets on pregnancy options.)

The reason Evelyn goes to Planned Parenthood in the first place:

"...a few weeks ago, I was at the beach with Lizzie complaining as usual about the cavernous gap below my shoulders where God forgot to put my boobs."

Her friend then says:

"Yeah, I would've thought you'd fill that bikini out a little better now that you're on the pill."

Then:

"...when I told her I wasn't, she freaked. I wanted a chest, so when she said I could go to Planned Parenthood and get a prescription without even telling my parents..."

"...visions of C-cups bounced in my brain. When I got there, they made me take a blood test, and it said I was already pregnant. The thought had not even occurred to me."

"I got drunk later that night."

"We got s***faced. We stripped down and went swimming in our underwear..."

And yes, there is much more!

"....it showed up and everything sucks. Now, I can't drink; I can't smoke weed; I can't have sex; I think there are kinds of foods I'm not supposed to eat; and there must be other stuff."

"Can I have sex?"

"...like, biologically. Can I have sex?"

"I never thought I could get pregnant. I'm a sack of bones with frizzy hair. I don't even look like anything that could get pregnant."

I think that's enough to give you an idea. She's like this through 90% of the book. The other 10% is her journey of "growth" - which isn't very moving because of the mass amount of stupidity that precedes it.

I think, overall, the impact of this story could've been more powerful had the author timed things a little better. Evelyn's moral revelations came much too late in the book for it to make me see her in a different light; much too late for me to forgive her or be proud of her.

Something I really enjoyed about this novel was the realism. Even though I couldn't stand the protag, I have to say it's, sadly, realistic. Some girls really are this ignorant and uneducated in matters of sex and pregnancy. It's a parent's responsibility to teach their sons and daughters about sex and the repercussions of having it--protected or unprotected, and this is something Evelyn's parents obviously failed in. Which is also, sadly, realistic. Some people would rather bury their head in the sand and remain in denial until it's too late. Ignorance is bliss, right? Until it's not. Discomfort over a conversation about sex seems much easier when you compare it to a conversation about your teenager being pregnant or impregnating someone. Caela Carter captured such a situation quite perfectly.

I can always appreciate an author that has the guts to tackle tough subjects. Teen pregnancy is always going to be one of them. Caela Carter did a fabulous job with it. It was respectfully done, for the most part, and it made for an emotional, moving read. All throughout the novel, Carter kept me guessing as to what Evelyn's final decision would be. I have to admit, I was surprised at what she finally chose to do. I feel like Carter took the road less traveled with her ending, and I like that. Won't spoil it, though. ;)

Overall, I think this book was good. It was hard to put myself in Evelyn's shoes because she was just so ignorant and naïve. I think maybe it's my age kicking in. I am 27 years old, and Evelyn is what, 16? 17? (I don't remember.) It's quite hard for me not to cast myself in a parental sort of role here. I just want to lecture this girl! Anyway, if you can get past her faults, this book is quite enjoyable. It's a journey. It's a lesson. It's emotional and realistic. I think this book will make readers ask themselves many hard questions. What would you do in Evelyn's situation? In the boy who got her pregnant's situation? In her parent's situation? I do recommend this book to teens. It's got some profanity and sexual situations, but it's message is a good one: your actions, such as unprotected sex, have consequences.

Powerful Teen Voice!

Caela Carter's "Me, Him, Them, and It" is a wonderful read. As a middle school librarian, I am always on the hunt for powerful, realistic fiction that captures the teen voice. This book has it. Teens (and people) make stupid decisions, and the main character Evie, gets pregnant. I love the pacing of the novel -- she really considers her options, which cause so much of the early tension in the novel, and after she's made it, the tension ramps up about what she's going to do about it. The second part of the novel is wonderful and diverse. I love Caela's treatment of race and family and making your own family. All in all, without giving away any spoilers, this is a great teen read, and will suck in the reluctant reader.

For a main character who is supposed to be smart, Evelyn sure is an idiot. In order to get her parents' attention, she decides to become "bad Evelyn." This means partying, drinking, smoking pot, and engaging in repeated acts of unprotected sex. When this unsurprisingly results in pregnancy, she withdraws and tries to ignore it, rejecting talking and making decisions. Once she does decide to carry the baby to term, she continues to reject everyone and avoids making decisions. I know she's in a tough situation and at only sixteen, she's largely incapable of maturity, but I just wanted to slap her at some points. As she grows to realize, she is surrounded by a group of people who will support her, provided she ask for some assistance and shares her feelings. That's ALL she has to do but she's mostly too stupid to do it.

At the beginning of the book, Evelyn is meeting with Mary from Planned Parenthood to discuss her options. She hates her parents: her cheating father who left them and her silent mother, who allowed him to come back for the sake of maintaining appearances. Although she had previously been the model daughter, she had rebelled (with long-term hookup Todd) in order to gain their attention. Her pregnancy is ultimately successful in this goal. After dithering for pages, she decides she still wants to continue to attend school but she does not want any one to know. Thus she moves from Florida to Chicago to live with her beloved Aunt Linda, her partner, and their children. The rest of the book follows Evelyn with them, as she continues to make no decisions or rushes through decisions only to regret them.

Although we have to spend our time in Evelyn's head with all her stupid thoughts, we still get to meet some characters who are actually endearing. Chief among them are Evelyn's adorable cousins Tammy and Cecelia. They are the sweetest cutest little girls and their innocent love and adoration of Evelyn was a much-needed pick-me-up. Another great character was Maryellie, a fellow pregnant student but her boyfriend is actually happy about the baby and her family is rallying around her to help her raise her child.

While I hope this review captures how annoying I found Evelyn, I can easily say that the writing was very engaging and the countdown to birth made the pages turn easily. The additional bright spots of Tammy and Cecelia and basically every character who wasn't Evelyn or the baby father Todd helped me get through the book.

Cover: Hair color and girl made of skin and bones is quite accurate actually so kudos for that-I also love the baby bump drawn on.

About the Author
The author:
Since 1965, Roy Thomas has been writing for movies, television, and especially comic books. With notable runs on Avengers, X-Men, Conan the Barbarian, Incredible Hulk, and Star Wars; he served as a Marvel editor from 1965-80 and editor-in-chief from 1972-74. He currently edits Alter Ego and writes two online Tarzan strips as well as the occasional comic book. He and his wife Dann live in South Carolina.

The editor and art director:
Josh Baker has been making books for TASCHEN since 2005. His one hundred-plus book collaborations include signed limited editions by Dennis Hopper, Bert Stern, and Ellen von Unwerth, and best-selling pop culture titles such as 75 Years of DC Comics and Norman Mailer’s Moonfire. He lives in Oakland, California.

It's MARVELous

Another giant (and weighty) leap for comics history as Taschen delivers the goods on Marvel. The huge books follows the same format as the story of DC Comics Taschen published in 2010 though with a couple of differences: the five fold-out Timelines in the DC book are now presented as a loose insert printed both sides and folding out to fifty-five inches wide; there is no index, which I find sort of amazing in a title like this.

The editorial covers eight decades of Marvel and author Roy Thomas would seem the obvious choice to write about the company, he was an editor there from 1965 to 1980. The four chapters, each opening like the DC book with a spread wide bit of art printed on thick paper with reflective metallic ink, look at the origins of Martin Goodman and his Timely Comics of which Marvel was a subsidiary group of titles. Timely morphed into Atlas comics in 1951 which eventually, in the early sixties, became the Marvel line that carries on today and the book is right up to date, too, with the cover of Black Widow issue six from July this year.

A nice feature of the editorial are references to comic and media items through the decades and how they related to Marvel and their comic characters. I think the real strength of the book is the art, pages and pages of covers, spreads, individual frames and several examples of cover art (blown up big) as inked but before the color was added. A two-page foldout of Steranko's spread from Strange tales 167 is also included.

The book's production is, as the DC title, first-class. Beautifully printed and bound with all the images getting deep comprehensive captions, eight pages at the back have biogs of several dozen writers and artists who were the real masters of Marvel. Taschen have thoughtfully provided a blue silk bookmark.

Overall a feast for the eyes but what will the next book be about? I'm putting my money on EC comics getting the Taschen treatment, in three or four years time.

and very well-chosen images from your favorite Marvel comic books

I'll start off by saying that this is definitely a quality product. I first preordered mine after talking to Roy Thomas in person and he told me he was just finishing some of it up.
If you're familiar with the 75 Years of DC Comics book that Taschen put out with Paul Levitz, then you know mostly what to expect--some large-scale, often rare, and very well-chosen images from your favorite Marvel comic books.

However, this book has none of the great artist/writer sections of text and images located throughout the DC version and this book doesn't have an index, which definitely makes it more difficult to navigate and easily find things of interest.

Awesome book for Marvel Comic Fans!

This is primarily a history of marvel told in pictures. Some comics histories are 80% text with 20% pictures. This is 80% pictures, which is awesome because of the visual nature of comics.
I love the mixture of pictures of covers (including famous ones we've all seen before) mixed with stuff we don't see as much, including interior pages & panels, ephemera, creators, original art and more.

I'm also loving it because Taschen borrowed comics from MY collection to photograph and about 25-30% of the comic photos in this book are from my collection. How cool is that! I was going back & forth between a "Where's Waldo" of "That's one of my books!" and "Wow! That's something I've never seen before!"

Highly recommended for the Marvel fan that wants a picture-heavy history of the company that redefined pop culture.
