What makes Catherine so special? She can't talk, she can't walk like her cousin Frances can. But Catherine listens very hard (hardly anyone does that), and she can walk in her special shoes, but when Frances tries, she just falls over! And her claps are so quiet that hardly anyone can hear them. These are the things that make Catherine special and, because her family knows how special she is, this makes them feel special too. This is the story of a child born with severe additional needs that focusses on the special nature of her abilities. Written from first-hand experience of the author's niece, this is a thoroughly researched and heart-warming book that will enlighten all who read it. Foreword by Jacqueline Wilson.

Grade 1–3—Catherine, who wears leg braces, has a special walk and a special way of clapping her hands (so quietly, no one ever hears them). Her cousin Frances thinks she can walk like Catherine but when she tries, she falls over. When she says that Catherine can't talk, Catherine's dad says, "lots and lots of people talk....too much....Catherine listens—really, really hard." Catherine is loved and valued. Her father seems to be a single parent with some involvement from a grandmother. The lovely watercolor illustrations capture joy and optimism. With subtlety and grace, they perfectly depict a child with disabilities. It is challenging to present such issues without seeming maudlin, and Moore has done this fairly well. However, in an effort to present some differences as positive abilities, there is sometimes an unrealistic overstatement of the importance of these traits. That said, this picture book is useful because of its value in generating needed discussion. An even better depiction of disabilities is Jane Cowen-Fletcher's Mama Zooms (Scholastic, 1996).—Mary Hazelton, Elementary Schools in Warren & Waldoboro, ME

Quiet, realistic, and beautiful, this spare picture book about a child with special needs gives new meaning to the word special. Catherine is different, and when her cousin, Frances, asks why, Catherine’s dad answers with facts and love. Catherine does not talk, but unlike many people who talk too much, Catherine listens “really, really hard.” She walks with special boots, and when Frances tries them on, she falls over and realizes the difficulties Catherine overcomes with every step. In a refreshing change, the single parent in the story is a dad, and Littlewood’s beautiful, unframed watercolor portraits show the father-daughter bond as he helps her keep her balance, listens to her special claps, and tucks her in bed. Their closeness is echoed in their extended family, and one image shows Catherine smiling on her grandmother’s lap and pointing to the pages of a picture book as Grandma reads a story. Great for family sharing, this title closes with a note about the child on whom Catherine is based. Preschool-Grade 3. --Hazel Rochman
Review
It is lovely - and too rare - to see the subject of disability covered in such a warm and positive way. Messages form legislation and non-discrimination policies are not as accessible nor as easily taken to heart, as a beautiful book that people of all ages want to open and read. The illustrations are sensitively and acutely observed, washed in vibrant, happy colors. Catherine comes alive as a real, pretty little girl who happens to have a disability. Bit of a gem, this book. --Carousel
5 stars. Not only is the text superbly and sensitively written, but the watercolor illustrations are an outstanding combination of warmth, love and understanding. --Books for Keeps
A beautiful moving book with a very positive message about disability. It would be a welcome addition to any family, class or school library. --English 4-11
A fantastically moving, uncomplicated and truly poignant story. This is her first children's book (I sincerely hope there are many more) and Genevieve Moore should be proud of herself for writing such an authentic and inclusive text that tugs on the heart strings while teaching so much. .. This is a book that should have a home on every nursery and infant school bookshelf. -- EYE

This is a charming tale of how Frances finds out just how special her cousin Catherine really is!
By Deb
Catherine's brown eyes were serious, but had a little twinkle in them as she stood pensively looking at a butterfly flit among the flowers. She later smiled as Frances, her cousin, blew bubbles at her as she lay in bed. It was kind of weird that Catherine's dad thought that she was so special when Frances simply didn't see it. After all, what was so special about the way she silently clapped or even the way she walked in those "special walking boots?" Why, anyone could do those kinds of things!
Just to prove it, Frances put on those walking boots and tried to walk with them. It wouldn't be all that difficult and she claimed, "I can walk like Catherine." Not. It wasn't long before Frances found herself tumbling onto the ground. Catherine didn't have any problem walking in them and when she walked across the room grandmother would clap. There were a lot of things Catherine couldn't do. She couldn't talk, she couldn't clap so everyone could hear her, and all kinds of other things girls her age could do. Just why was Catherine so special?
This is a charming tale of how Frances finds out just how special her cousin Catherine really is. One of the most striking aspects of this book is the love that exudes from its pages. Catherine's family loves her dearly and she loves them back in her own special way. I especially liked the way Frances learns how Catherine, her disabled cousin, is quite gifted in her own way. The watercolors mesh perfectly with the story and are quite touching, especially when we see Catherine nestled against Frances. This is a beautiful story, one that will tell little ones just how special some people really are. In the back of the book is a note on a child suffering from West Syndrome, the child upon whom this book is based.
