A Love that Heals

Jake is put on a forced vacation and on his first morning home he intercepts would-be vandals in his backyard. Luckily it is before they can do any damage. He returns this culprit to his mother, his neighbor. Carrie is startled to find a uniformed officer on her doorstep early the in morning and even more so when she finds out he is bringing her son home. Carrie is a widow and her husband was killed 6 years previously during a bank robbery by police officer and ever since she has harbored mistrust and fear of all police. What unfolds in this story is heartwarming, healing, friendship, and a love that will last. Oh, and don't forget the Italian Mama who shows up. I recommend this book to all!

Witty read

This wasn't a bad read at all. You are dealing with strong independent characters but true to life. They are all believable even the kids in the story. Life struggles everyone or anyone could be dealing with but it has its funny witty moments also. It catches you on page 1 and you don't want to put it down till the end. A few moments where you get sad but what true relationship worth fighting for doesn't have it's ups and downs just a way of life to figure out how to deal with the problems.

Carrie Padilla , widowed mother of an 8 year old son looked out the peephole to see a cop on her doorstep, its only the crack of dawn and she has a deep seeded reason to panic when ever she sees a cop so she won't open the door till he shows the identification she has asked for.
As she opens the door to the officer, Jake Stefani , her panic doesn't stop her from noticing his warm brown eyes and muscular build.
then out from behind the officer steps her son who she thought was asleep upstairs and oh no he has a guilty look on his face.
This is really a four and a half star captivating read. The relationship between the boy and the cop was heartwarming and fun to watch it build, and the feelings of angst between Carrie and Jake kept me turning the pages.

Have you ever been that girl, the girl that is the perceived fat chick? I am that girl. I work in a child care centre, in the toddler room. I get to spend my days playing, colouring and singing the kiddie songs to my heart’s content to 2 to 3 and half year olds.

I came around the corner to the most stunning man along with a beautiful little girl I have ever seen. I got that can’t eat, can’t breathe can’t friggin talk kind of feeling, ya I got that. I worked through it though and introduced myself.
I am Tyler Creed, owner of Creed and associates. We buy and sell businesses and help to operate many that have a failing chance unless we step in.
Walking in to the daycare at 6:30 am I am exhausted from listening to the little bug’s songs and will be happy when I get the little reprieve from her music on the drive to the office. What I didn’t expect was gorgeous, curvy women to walk up and greet me. I am momentarily stunned speechless. I have to look away or else I will not make into work and I will be taking this unknown goddess to her office and having my wicked way with her.
What I didn’t expect is for the Mother of my child to come back with a vengeance and hurt my soul-mate, I didn’t expect other people to get in between the love of my life and make her run. I didn’t expect her to not listen to me when others filled her head with lies, but that is what happened that is what took my love away from me. That is what got her hurt that is what made me stand for her and support her even though she didn’t want me. I was hers no matter what she thinks and I will get my girl back. I will get my family whole and I will show the world that Cadence Matthews is my one and only.
She just doesn’t know it yet.

Amazing read.

Finally a story about a heroine who isn't a stick/Victoria secrets model.
I read this in one day. It's and easy read with a nice flow were nothing is too rushed or drawn out.

I enjoyed this story for many reasons. But the main reason is that we have your everyday characters. The size 16 girl who has body issues and has a daily fight with people looking down on her.
She loves with her whole heart and she fights for her family and you can't help but love her.

Aaaaand then we have the devoted father.
I want to say he is a prick but don't worry he is not. There is one scene that had me screaming "noooo don't do it!" But other then those few lines he is perfect. He knows love when he sees it and he isn't afraid to show emotions. Ladies and gentlemen we have a man who cries his heart out! That's amazing. We all know our favorite male characters from other books (whom we all love). These men get drunk and go on a f*** everything with a v*. No this man fights hard and isn't afraid to show emotions.

I wouldn't mind reading aria's story :) pretty please?

JA Lafrance contacted me asking if I would be willing to review her new book. Once I read the synopsis and noticed that Cadence wasn't the usual perfect body, size one girl, I immediately agreed. This might sound funny, but I love reading stories when the heroine is voluptuous and she's the one that gets the guy. It makes me feel happy knowing that there are "book boyfriends" out there that love us curvy women too! Most books are usually about the perfect girl with the perfect body, and that's fine too, but I love these stories just as much! As for the storyline, I enjoyed it! I liked Tyler and Cadence. It had a lot of dirty talking and sexual content, which are both fine with me! But if you're someone that likes to read something a little more G-rated, this may not be for you. I loved that Tyler was constantly telling Cadence how much she turned him on. Even when other women were constantly throwing themselves at him, he never gave them a second thought once he met Cadence. He was so in love with her and that's what made me like him even more. As for Cadence's brother, he's too much! Lol! He was definitely what you would call a manwhore and he had me cracking up with all his antics. I liked the ending. It was really cute and I'm happy that everyone was happy and in love. Her Billionaire is a great start for a new author!

I like the story

I like the story. It was unique, even though the love-at-first-sight, alpha male taking everything over, thing was a bit over the top. And that's not where the criticism stops. There is no way that those women would have lasted in a daycare program without complaints getting them fired long before they were. The pet names and slobbery phrases were truly annoying. I pride myself on not giving bad reviews for grammatical errors and typos, but I just can't get past them. Even if you don't have a decent editor, BETA and ARC reads are meant to catch the things that don't fit or any mistakes left behind. There were notes left in the book that should have been removed. The name of the book headed each chapter. Confusing determiners and contractions with each other is one of my biggest pet peeves. So many of the quotes sounded like gang speak. There wasn't once that the word "woman" was used in the singular. As a copy editor, I could see the potential for a good story there, but I could not get past how terribly it was written. This entire story needs to be rewritten.

If performing any type of self taught work, expect to use this title for a paper weight. Without prior experience, I found the book to be difficult to follow and the practice examples poor. The book also seemed very far out of date.

Great for beginners

I used this book to study for the Excelsior College's Introductory Statistics exam (college credit by examination, former Regents'), and got the maximum. I had the 9th (revised) edition, published in 1997.
Only knowledge of elementary algebra is required; no calculus whatsoever is needed here.
The book contains 17 chapters; for this exam I only needed about 13. Broad outline of content: summarizing data, probabilities and possibilities, expectations and decisions, probability distributions, normal distribution, sampling distributions, inferences about means/standard deviations/proportions, analysis of variance, regression, correlation, nonparametric tests.
I very much appreciated the way that the content was organized: easy to read, very structured, with clear and detailed examples. At the end of each chapter or minichapter - questions and problems.
Totally unnecessary, and outdated, are the computer generated examples that pop out now and then throughout the book.
In conclusion, highly recommended.

A Creepy Perlude to the End of the World

There are quite a few very disturbing things about the main character who narrates this short tale. He calmly explains step-by-step the progression he goes through from being a hum-drum insurance salesman to his role as the bringer of the apocalypse. On almost every page, I thought to myself "This is not how the end of the world happens," and at the same instant found myself thinking, "Yeah, it is . . . this is exactly how the end of the world happens." The plot is not complicated. There isn't much action. The characters are not particularly interesting -- but the story is really creepy and weird and scary because it takes you inside the mind of LUKAN - the bringer of the apocalypse. It simply rings true: This is how the world as we know it is going to end.

Prequel a Great Set Up

This novelette is a prequel to David Forsyth's SOVEREIGN SPIRIT saga. I have to admit that I have them on my Kindle but have not read them yet. Just as well. This is an excellent set up piece that explains how it all came to be and how the virus infects the world.

Well written, tightly plotted and good pacing and character development. Overall an excellent read and short at only 44 pages.

I look forward to reading the other books and may have to move them up my TBR list.

This is depopulation event. Will you survive?

The year is... well, it could be this year. There is overpopulation in the world and we are using up our resources faster than we can replace them. War looms or is going on in distant countries. And a man finds out that he is dying of cancer, and has nothing to lose. Contacted by a secret society, he is given the option to be a vector for a "sterility virus" by taking a Round-the-World trip in his last two months of life, and he's told that this virus will help reduce overpopulation.

What would you do?

This short story is about what Lukan decides to do, and how his actions affect others. Even though this is a short story, you are given enough information about Lukan and his life and thoughts to genuinely like the man even as you want to dislike him. Lukan is a prequel to the "Sovereign Spirit Saga", and if the rest of the story is written to this caliber I believe that it will be interesting and well-worth purchasing.

In the Novel Quiet Strength,Tony Dungy walks us through his life as a Christian. He describes his childhood, where he learned from his parents on what living a Christian life should be like. He explained his struggles as he went through high school and college on how he didn’t know what his own relationship with Christ was. He then tells us how he begins to find his way and figure out what he wants. He takes us through his journey with his wife and family and all of the challenges they were faced with and how Christ helped them. Reading about Tony Dungy’s life and how he overcame so many obstacles while keeping a relationship with Christ made me feel like he was directly talking to me about my own personal struggles. The way he described each struggle he was faced with, made it feel like I was there, experiencing those obstacles along side of him. The way he wrote and described these obstacles allowed me to relate to them and understand his pain and joy through them. As I was reading the novel I found it hard to stay focused on the plot when he began to further explain the football games that were not relevant to the story at the time. I would highly suggest this novel to any athlete that has struggles, finding that they are playing for themselves rather than playing for Christ. This novel really makes you feel like you can do anything through Christ, and it will have a good outcome, no matter when that outcome happens. It is not only just for athletes but also for anyone who feels like they are struggling with life, or something they are passionate about. This novel really spoke to me personally as an athlete and a follower of Christ. If having to rate this novel, I would rate it an eight out of a ten. One of my favorite, most interesting, and personal books I have ever read.

Very Motivational and Inspirational

I was looking for a book that I would enjoy reading while also improving my practice of Christianity in everyday life. With football being one of my top interests, I decided that this book sounded like a good choice to try out, and it did not disappoint.

Tony describes the road that he has taken through life from early childhood all the way to the time that he wrote this book in 2008. He explains the difficult decisions that he had to make and how his relationship and faith in God helped him through the most challenging times and in the end made him a better person. Tony also tells his successes and how he truly believes the Lord used previous life experiences to prepare him for similar future ones.

Whether you are a football fan or not this book is extremely relatable and motivational. Tony draws on his career as an NFL player and coach because that is where he experienced some of his biggest challenges, but he also builds on the toughest times that his family endured. His ability to correlate a personal example to the numerous types of situations that we as humans face daily was spectacular. Tony does an amazing job of not only stating his regrets and contentment, but also elaborates on what signs he saw from God and how he was able to later reflect on them.

The effect of this book has made me want to change my way of living by constantly glorifying God and following his lead. Dungy also provided me with inspiration to continuously perform acts of kindness, regardless of its size because it could be something that changes a person’s life, as it did in his case. “Quiet Strength” was very deserving of its Bestseller accolade and is very much recommended for anyone interested in living a happier and more rewarding lifestyle.

A Man of God and Football

Tony Dungy is extraordinarily represented in the beautiful memoir written by Nathan Whitaker that articulates the struggles and wonders of his amazing life journey. As I read this book the hope that came to my mind was the wish that more men would look at trials in life the way that Dungy has. As a professional athlete, and later a very successful NFL coach, Dungy displays the character of a God fearing man and what it looks like to live that life out in the football league. Quiet Strength speaks to a very special bond that fathers should long to have with their family. One must learn to lead with a soft heart and possess passion when in a position that compels you to change those around you, as others will pick up on your behavior like those around Dungy did, and use that passion to excite themselves in all that they do. I will be passing along this book to numerous family members as the season of Christmas is upon us, in hopes that they gain a new outlook on the opportunities that present themselves to us on a daily basis through the words of Dungy.

This book is written very conversationally and clearly and uses a lot of helpful examples. Churchland does a wonderful job of explaining all the possible arguments and viewpoints, and the book is well laid out and organized.

A Lot About Matter and A Little About Consciousness

William James long ago named consciousness as psychology's "ultimate mystery." So far, psychology has made little progress in solving that mystery. Churchland does a fine job reporting the history of the study of matter and the "materialist" position and describes as well the historical antecedents of "dualism." The author clearly is a materialist (as are most psychologists and psychoneuroscientists, who diligently work on the assumption that if they knew more about the physiological structure and activity of the brain, the mysteries of consciousness would be solved). What is not well addressed in this book are contemporary issues and questions about consciousness, some inspired by mounting evidence that consciousness survives brain death and also the role consciousness plays in the study of quantum phenomena. Also not included are several contemporary dualist positions, some developed by quantum physicists. The considered skepticism of several Nobel Laureates in biology, physics, and other disciplines that even complete knowledge of the material brain will provide answers about consciousness is not mentioned. The danger is that potential psycho-neuroscientists, who may be assigned this book as a text, will leave further indoctrinated into the materialist point of view which continues to bind much of psychology and limits new, and sorely needed, approaches to questions of consciousness. Those waiting for psychologists to shed light on these questions have a long wait ahead. This may explain why more scholars in other disciplines are trying to attack the problem themselves.

Sham "philosophy"

"Neurophilosophy" is not philosophy. It's watered-down science. It's a sham philosophy.

The biggest beef I have with the whole academic endeavor of neuro-"philosophy" is that it can't seem to make up its mind if it wants to be an historical endeavor, thoroughly critiquing and engaging the history of philosophy in a tightly hermeneutical fashion (not just in an almost conversational fashion as we find in this book, or even in the longer magnum opus, "Neurophilosophy") as befits its history, or are they merely armchair scientists with a philosophical bent?

For instance, on pg 86, where Churchland discusses Phenomenology from Hegel to Husserl, a "rich (philosophical) tradition" is relegated to a mere page (then, not-so-humbly humbly apologized for being rendered as such), and described, negatively, as a kind of "conceptual construction" (a bit ironic, no?) focused on the idealistic bent of Husserl's thought...then, we are quickly off to a discussion of Behaviorism on the next page. This is cocktail hour, not philosophy (and hardly the excellent critique Frege unfurled on the early thought of Husserl, but very much in line with Russell's annoyingly revisionist "history" of philosophy).

Anyway, it seems that younger cognitive scientists with a philosophical bent (how "neuro-philosophers" really should be categorized), along with others in newer Anglo-American schools of thought such as Object-Oriented Ontology, are becoming more and more interested in branches of philosophy such as Phenomenology, and less primarily attached to this wildly reductive, "consciousness-is-only-matter" blindness that the Churchland's purvey...

This is a church of materialism à la Ayn Rand, though dressed up by a much brighter intelligence, but it still hardly qualifies as philosophy. It's akin to arguing that, because you have all the schematics of how a combustion engine works, an engineer's knowledge about suspension and aerodynamics, and a perfect intellectual grasp of Newtonian physics in general, then you must now know everything there is to know about racing a Formula One race car. It's pretty much laughable as philosophy (and, perhaps, exists as a negative strain of pataphysics).

Sheri Spaine Long (Ph.D. UCLA) is Editor of Hispania - A journal devoted to the teaching of Spanish and Portuguese, the scholarly journal of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP). Most recently, Dr. Long served as Professor and Chair of the Department of Languages and Culture Studies at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. She is a specialist in language teaching and learning. A regular presenter and invited speaker at national and international conferences, Dr. Long delivered over 100 talks from Havana to Beijing and across the United States. She actively engages the field and continues to publish on the integration of leadership development and language learning, the language profession, and Madrid in literature. Dr. Long published more than 50 articles, chapters, and reviews and her recent co-authored textbooks published with Cengage include Nexos. Introductory Spanish, 4th ed., and Alianzas. Intermediate Spanish., 2nd ed., Cuadros. Introductory and Intermediate Spanish., among others. She received the prestigious Steiner Award for Leadership in Foreign Language Education from the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) in 2009.

Maria Carreira is Associate Professor of Spanish at California State University, Long Beach. She holds a Ph.D. in linguistics from the University of Illinois, Champaign. Carreira has written linguistic notes, profiles of well-known Hispanics, and heritage learner annotations. She is active in issues relating to heritage learners.

Sylvia Madrigal, a Yale graduate, has been in the foreign language publishing field for about 20 years. She has worked at Houghton Mifflin and at D.C. Heath, where she helped develop and write activities for the award-winning Dimelo CD-ROM series. She has authored a variety of educational materials, including video scripts for HM's TravelTour video and Caminos del jaguar.

Kris Swanson has an M.A. in Hispanic Studies from Brown University. She has been in the foreign language publishing field for about 15 years. She currently works as a consultant and freelance writer, editor, and project manager.
